“I’ve only missed four Homecomings since 1954. It’s what alumni are supposed to do — to meet their classmates! I have family, they live in Dallas, and they had my grandchildren. We brought them from age 1 all the way up. Now I’ve got a great-grandchild. She’s a year and a half. They’re bringing her tomorrow for the parade.

“When I graduated [in 1954], the business school was on the third floor of the SUB. There were four dormitories. The gymnasium was over here; that was the only thing on that side of 5th street. The law school was at the very end. There was a drugstore — Baylor Drug. It was in an old Army barracks building. Then they built Tidwell Bible Building while I was here. Waco Hall… Seventh and James… It was just a very small campus. There were about 3,500 students in the whole enrollment, so we knew everybody.

“I had an Arkansas roommate, and I had two Dallas roommates. We’ve kept in touch with all four. Their children came to Baylor also. My children know some of their children. Every year at Homecoming we stand in front of Penland, so if anybody wants to know where we are, we say just come to the front of Penland. We bring our chairs and sit on the street and watch the parade go by. It’s been fun. It really has.”
