• #BearsOfBaylor — “College band is great because you get to play music that you love…”

“I’m in the marching band… We spend so much time together, we went on so many trips together, we had so many great memories that it was a very nice community to be a part of, just because we had all of these great experiences together. We bonded over that. We just got closer. With band, you get people from all areas of the university. It was really cool to see how we all meshed.

“High school band is very competitive, very goal-oriented. College band is great because you get to play music that you know, music that you love and that you can dance to. You get to do different, cool things that you wouldn’t get to do in high school. …

“With the Star Wars show, we played it three times. We played it at Homecoming here, at the Texas Tech game up in Arlington, and at the Cactus Bowl. Every single time, the crowd reaction made it worth it. … One of the most meaningful things was during the Cactus Bowl. We were rehearsing the show the morning of the game, and during rehearsal is when we got the news that Carrie Fisher died. Performing that was a very good moment.

“That was also the performance we did after David Grotberg died. He was in band and he was just such a light to us. We loved him so much. He gave a lot of people energy and happiness that he never really realized. Performing that and that event just brought everyone closer together. It was just something that for the people that graduate or the people who quit on band will always have that moment and have that connection; it will always be something that’s special to us.”
