• #BearsOfBaylor — “We have adopted two sons from foster care.”

“I graduated in ’07 – almost a decade ago! I was a studio art major. Now I’m living in Waco; I stay at home with my kiddos. My husband is a pastor here in Waco. We have been foster parents for the last four years, and we have adopted two sons from foster care. One of our sons is biracial — African-American — and then our other is Hispanic. For us, it’s really important to learn more about their cultures and make sure that we’re doing everything we can to make sure they grow up knowing who they are. … To have conversations in our house, to have books in our house and role models in our house who aren’t just white.

“There have been times when I’ve been at the grocery store and have had my black son and my Hispanic son in the grocery cart with me. And you know, people notice, and people look, and they’re just kind of curious. They’ll ask, ‘Are these your sons?’ ‘Yes!’ It doesn’t bother me. We’re really open about what our family looks like and how it’s different, so it’s never been an issue for us.”
