• #BearsOfBaylor — “I called it ‘organized chaos,’ and it was perfect.”

[For Community Leader Appreciation Week, we’re sharing thoughts from CLs across campus all week; today, a Brooks Flats CL.]

“All my life, I’ve been kind of willy-nilly, kind of a flower child, and it’s been fine. It worked for me. I called it ‘organized chaos,’ and it was perfect. And then you get into a position where you are not only responsible for your life, but like 35+ other lives, plus your staff, plus just how you interact with other people. You have to get your stuff together, and I didn’t know how to do that.

“Now, I’m aware that there’s an issue, and I’m trying to fix it. I started color-coding things — I’ve never color-coded anything! I use a planner. And I’m going to see people about how to schedule my life and make sure I know what’s going on and that things don’t hit me out of the blue just because I wasn’t aware of them… This job is teaching me some very valuable skills, albeit usually through mistakes. But I’m still being taught a lot of really good lessons. …

“I have a huge, massive heart for people, and I just think that’s something that has grown in this job. It’s grown in my walk with God — because I asked for it. I said, ‘Hey, give me a bigger heart,’ and He was like, ‘BAM!’ I was like, ‘Wait, pause! Wait!’ And He’s like, ‘Nope, no takesies-backsies! You asked!’ So I have this immense heart, and now I have the privilege of taking care of all of these people. Not like mothering them, but more along the lines of helping them to love themselves, in whatever capacity that looks like.”
