Baylor SOE partnership with Midway ISD receives national award
Eight years ago, Midway High School became a Baylor Professional Development School (PDS) campus. For Baylor School of Education (SOE) undergraduate students, that meant that instead of sitting in a classroom staring at PowerPoint slides, they could get real classroom experience with mentor teachers. For Midway, it meant exposure to emerging best teaching practices (like researching how furniture layout can affect learning), a hand in developing some of the best teachers in the nation, and an up-close look at possible future employees.
Since then, two more Midway ISD schools have become Baylor PDS campuses, and many more have formed other partnerships with the School of Education. As a result, the nearly decade-long partnership was one of just three in the nation to receive the “Exemplary Professional Development School Achievement Award” from the National Association for Professional Development Schools (NAPDS) this month.
The award recognizes collaborations that “shape educator leadership and practice.” Noting the strength and benefits of the Baylor-Midway partnership, the NAPDS selection committee described the arrangement as “an excellent example of a strong school-university partnership.”
