• #BearsOfBaylor — “The love for it is what’s gonna drive you to discover.”

“I teach in the art department. … I’ve always been very interested in art, and when I was 19 years old I was trying to decide what to do. I was in Europe, and I saw the museums and the paintings there, and on my way home I knew that I wanted to be a painter. So then I pursued painting, went to school and eventually found my way into teaching. I taught in Portland, Oregon, for a few years, and then took the job here three years ago.

“I teach the foundation-level classes, so they’re basic classes. Often those are students who haven’t done a lot in their college career yet. But I can tell when someone’s really talented. It’s as if all the gears are just turning and things connect with them. I don’t know which is more valuable, if someone has talent or if they love it. I think that loving it is probably more important than talent. The love for it is what’s gonna drive you to discover. Sometimes people who are really talented have a problem because things come too easily, so they don’t become searchers.”
