Pop quiz: How many Baylor students participate in official student organizations? How many student organizations does Baylor offer?

Before you guess, take into consideration all the Greek organizations and professional societies Baylor offers. Then start thinking outside the box a little bit; if you’re a Baylor student with an interest in sailing, there’s a club for that. If you’re from the North African country of Eritrea looking to meet students from your home country, there’s a club for that, too. There are also student organizations that serve the community by working with at-risk youth, host Bible studies, participate in taekwondo, and bring together students interested in studying the plastics that protect us in cars and airplanes.

Even that only gives you a small taste of the scope of clubs overseen by Baylor Student Activities. So, now what’s your answer?

Believe it or not, more than 9,000 Baylor students — nearly 60% of Baylor undergraduate and graduate students — participate in the university’s 350+ student organizations that are increasingly becoming an integral part of the Baylor student experience. Five years ago, Baylor Student Activities streamlined the process for students to start a university-approved club so that more great ideas could become reality. Since then, the number of students participating in student organizations has doubled.

Here’s just a small sampling of what’s available beyond Greek organizations and club sports:

Baylor Aviation || Baylor Quidditch Association || Baylor Sailing Club || Baylor Swing Dance Society || Baylor Theme Park Engineering and Design || Bears For Orphans || Christian Business Leaders || India Subcontinent Student Association || Literary Society || Logistics, Procurement and Supply Chain Association || Meals & Wheels Volunteers || National Association of Black Journalists || Super Smash Brothers Club || Society of Plastics Engineers || Special Olympics Club || Women in Mathematics

In other words, there’s something for everyone — and that’s the point.

“We want every Baylor student to have a place they call home,” Student Activities Director Matt Burchett says. “Student organizations strengthen the culture and community we’re building; we want every student to have a place that makes them feel like Baylor is ‘their Baylor,’ and student organizations provide that home, a place to plug in, for many students.”

So, there’s no excuse for a Baylor student not to find a club that meets his or her passions and interests. And if you ask a Baylor student what club he or she wants to participate in, and the answer is, “Whatever, ” well… there’s a club for that, too.

    Sic ’em, Baylor Student Organizations!
