Lady Bears reach NCAA championship game, will play for national title Tuesday

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors, Photo Galleries, Videos

Baylor Lady Bears

Clear your calendars for Tuesday night: Baylor is playing for another national championship.

For the second time in seven years, the Lady Bear basketball team has reached the NCAA tournament title game — this time, with a perfect record on the line. Undefeated Baylor will attempt to become the first team in NCAA basketball history (men’s or women’s) to win 40 games in a season Tuesday night when BU faces Notre Dame in Denver (7:30 p.m. CT, ESPN).

With Heisman winner Robert Griffin III, President Ken Starr and former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice among the crowd of 19,028, No. 1 overall seed Baylor fought off a tough challenge from No. 2-ranked Stanford Sunday night, pulling away midway through the second half to win 59-47. All year, Kim Mulkey (the 2012 Associated Press Coach of the Year) has insisted that her Lady Bears are more than just a one-person team, that her team’s success isn’t completely dependent on AP National Player of the Year Brittney Griner.

Stanford swarmed Griner all night, challenging other Baylor players to step up, and they did. While Griner recorded “only” 13 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks, senior reserve guard Terran Condrey came off the bench to match Griner’s team-high 13 points (just the fifth double-digit scoring effort in Condrey’s four years at BU). Forward Destiny Williams led all players with 10 rebounds, and the Lady Bears’ team defense held Stanford (the fifth-highest scoring team in the nation) to a season-low 47 points.

A large Baylor contingent was loud and proud at the Pepsi Center in Denver Sunday night, and more will likely join them for Tuesday. BU fans were also gathered all around the country for Final Four watch parties, and will do so again Tuesday night for the championship. Lady Bears return to Final Four for second time in three years

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors, Photo Galleries, Videos

Brittney Griner vs. TennesseeDenver-area Bears, get ready — the Lady Bears are headed your way.

Wins in the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight — Baylor’s 37th and 38th of the season without a loss — have propelled the women’s basketball team to its second Final Four in three years. The No. 1-ranked Lady Bears will face fellow No. 1 seed Stanford on Sunday in the national semifinals with an eye toward claiming the program’s second national championship.

Destiny Williams (18 points vs. Georgia Tech in Saturday’s Sweet 16 match-up) and Odyssey Sims (27 points Monday night vs. Tennessee in the Elite Eight) vied for weekend MVP honors, but the best player in women’s college basketball, Brittney Griner, was again the star of the show.

[LINKS: Highlights and photos vs. Georgia Tech || Highlights and photos vs. Tennessee || ESPN breaks down the dunk || BG off the court, kayaking and longboarding || ESPNW: "Mulkey's life a highlight reel of Title IX success"]

In an 83-68 win over the Yellow Jackets, Griner poured in 35 points to go along with 10 rebounds and six blocks, but drew the most eyes when she threw down a two-handed dunk in the second half — her second dunk in as many games. Then against the Lady Vols, the junior just missed a triple-double with 23 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks as Baylor won 77-58 in what could be the final game for legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt, who is suffering from early onset dementia.

Of course, the week couldn’t go by without more honors for the Lady Bears. Griner and Sims were named among the 12 finalists for the State Farm Wade Trophy, given annually to the national player of the year. Head coach Kim Mulkey was announced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association as one of eight finalists for the WBCA National Coach of the Year award. And Griner’s two dunks were named SportsCenter’s No. 3 highlight of the entire NCAA tournament (men’s or women’s).

As I write, a crowd is expectantly gathering at the Waco airport’s Texas Aero building to greet the team when it arrives home; the Lady Bears are expected back right around midnight late Monday/early Tuesday.

Griner dunks as Lady Bears reach Sweet 16 for fourth straight year

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors, Photo Galleries, Videos

Brittney Griner's dunk vs FloridaFor the fourth year in a row — and seventh time in head coach Kim Mulkey’s 12 seasons at Baylor — the Lady Bears are headed to the Sweet 16.

The No. 1 overall seed in this year’s NCAA women’s tournament, Baylor beat No. 16 seed UC-Santa Barbara by 41 in the first round, then methodically worked past No. 9 seed Florida 76-57 in the second round. But the story getting the most attention Tuesday night was Brittney Griner’s dunk.

The 6-foot-8 junior became just the second women’s basketball player ever to dunk in the NCAA tournament, calmly putting down a drop-step slam early in the second half. The dunk was the sixth of Griner’s career, one shy of the NCAA women’s record held by former Tennessee star Candace Parker.

Next up for Mulkey’s squad: No. 4 seed Georgia Tech. The Lady Bears and Yellow Jackets will square off Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa; as I’m writing this, no word yet on game time or television coverage. Stay tuned to BaylorBears.com or @BaylorProud on Twitter for those details once they are announced. [3/21 update: Baylor will face Georgia Tech Saturday at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN.]

With such success has also come a host of honors for Baylor… First, President Barack Obama picked the Lady Bears to win it all in his bracket. Then Griner and Mulkey were each named one of four finalists for national awards — Griner for the Naismith Trophy as national player of the year, and Mulkey for the Naismith Coach of the Year. [Learn how you can vote Griner for Naismith here.] And last but not least, Director of Athletics Ian McCaw was announced as one of five finalists for SportsBusinessJournal’s Athletic Director of the Year — a truly deserving honor, given the year Baylor Athletics is enjoying.

SI, Obama recognize Baylor teams are ready for deep tournament runs

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors

Sports Illustrated March Madness coverIs it safe to say Baylor is now a basketball powerhouse? One stat that says yes: Over the last two years, only two schools — Duke and UConn — have had their men’s and women’s basketball squads together in the AP Top 10 for more weeks than Baylor.

Sports Illustrated recognized the combined success of the No. 9-ranked Baylor men and No. 1-ranked Lady Bears, giving BU six spots on its March Madness cover collage (pictured at right; click the photo for a larger version). Can you find them all?*

President Barack Obama also predicted the Bears will upset Duke and reach the Elite Eight in his full men’s bracket, and picked the Lady Bears in his women’s Final Four (full bracket not yet released).

The Baylor men open the 2012 tournament tomorrow night vs. South Dakota State; game time is set for 6:27 p.m. CT on truTV. The Lady Bears don’t play until Sunday, when they will face UC-Santa Barbara; tip-off is approximately 1:30 p.m. CT, and the game will air on ESPN2.

Baylor Lady Bears named NCAA tournament’s No. 1 overall seed

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors, Videos

 Baylor Lady Bears No. 1 seed

Back-to-back Big 12 regular season titles. Back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles. And now, back-to-back No. 1 seeds in the NCAA tournament — this time, as the very best team in the nation.

The undefeated and top-ranked Baylor women’s basketball program continued to make program history Monday night as the team was named the tournament’s overall No. 1 seed. The Lady Bears will begin the 2012 NCAA tournament Sunday in the Des Moines Region, facing Big West tournament champion UC-Santa Barbara in Bowling Green, Ohio; tip-off is set for approximately 1:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, and the game will air on ESPN2 (see full bracket here).

[WATCH: ESPN: "Will Baylor win the tournament?" || ESPN's Des Moines Region overview || Kobe, Lebron & Chris Paul talk about Griner || ESPN interviews Mulkey & Griner || ESPN: "How do you beat Brittney Griner?"]

The target on Baylor’s back is clear. Head coach Kim Mulkey’s squad is 34-0; six more wins would give the Lady Bears their second NCAA championship and the first 40-0 record in NCAA D-I basketball history (men’s or women’s). Baylor has been the unanimous No. 1 team in the country for more than three months, and the team has already defeated two of the other three No. 1 seeds (UConn and Notre Dame) as well as the No. 2 seed in their own bracket (Tennessee). More than 60% of ESPN SportsNation voters (out of 50,000+ votes) and all six ESPN women’s basketball experts have picked BU to win it all.

No single player can carry a team this far, and the Lady Bears are much more than just a one-person team. But it does help to have a star like Brittney Griner. ESPN.com already named the 6-foot-8 junior its National Player of the Year; Griner has also won back-to-back Big 12 Player of the Year honors and back-to-back Big 12 tournament MVP honors. That’s why ESPN dedicated an entire segment during the selection show to “How do you beat Brittney Griner?” Even NBA superstars Kobe Bryant, Lebron James and Chris Paul know about her talents.

Back to back: Lady Bear basketball claims second straight Big 12 Conference title

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors

Baylor Lady Bears, 2012 Big 12 champsThe only undefeated team in Division-I basketball (men’s or women’s), the unanimous No. 1 team in the country for most of the season, and now the Big 12 Conference champions for the second year in a row. That’s head coach Kim Mulkey’s Baylor women’s basketball team.

The Lady Bears defeated Texas Tuesday night, 80-59, to improve to 28-0 on the season and clinch the 2011-12 Big 12 championship outright. The title comes after Baylor won both the Big 12 regular season and tournament championships last year en route to the Elite Eight.

[The official 2012 Lady Bears Big 12 Champs t-shirt, seen at right, is now available from the Baylor Bookstore.]

The numbers are incredible. Entering tonight’s game, the Lady Bears led the nation in field-goal percentage and field-goal percentage defense; over their last 70 games, they’ve gone 66-4; and they’ve won 39 straight in the Ferrell Center, dating back to March 2009.

Tuesday’s win also gave Baylor a clean sweep of Texas for the year in the “big three” sports (football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball) — a first in BU athletics history. In fact, Bear fans have seen all three sports among the top 25 in the nation now for the last 15 weeks, a run of success that prompted this excellent in-depth article, “Baylor Rising,” in the new issue of Sports Illustrated.

The Lady Bears have three regular season games remaining: Friday at Kansas (6:30 p.m., FSN), Monday at Texas A&M (6 p.m., ESPN2) and March 3 at home against Iowa State for Senior Day (11 a.m., FSN). They’ll then head to Kansas City as the No. 1 seed for the 2012 Big 12 tournament, March 7-10; tickets for both the final home game and the conference tournament are now available if you’d like to see your Lady Bears in action again before March Madness hits.

Country star’s crush leads to appearance at Baylor by Lady Bears’ newest fan

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Just for Fun, Videos

Kim Mulkey and Trace AdkinsAbout 30 years ago, Trace Adkins — then a freshman walk-on football player at Louisiana Tech — developed a crush on his school’s all-American senior point guard, a scrappy young lady from Hammond, La. But he never got up the nerve to approach her, and eventually they went their separate ways.

Adkins became a country music star, charting more than 20 singles and recording three number-one hits. That little point guard, you may have guessed, is Kim Mulkey, now head coach of the Baylor Lady Bears. Over the past year, Adkins has mentioned his crush on Mulkey at several concerts in his introduction to one song.

[WATCH: Adkins talk about Mulkey at a concert last spring || A recap of Adkins' visit to Baylor]

One thing led to another and the two have reconnected, leading Adkins to come to Waco and perform the national anthem before Saturday’s game vs. Texas A&M. The record-tying crowd of 10,627 got two shows for the price of one, enjoying Adkins’ excellent rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before watching the Lady Bears pound A&M 71-48 and send the Aggies back to College Station for the final time having lost nine of their last 10 games to Baylor.

Adkins said after the game that he hopes to catch the Lady Bears again at the Big 12 Tournament next month in Kansas City.

Final football rankings, top-5 hoops teams carry BU athletics into (green and) golden era

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors

Brittney Griner, Robert Griffin III and Perry Jones IIIEnjoy this time, Baylor fans; we are truly living in a (green and) golden era for Baylor sports.

We’ll start with last night’s news: Baylor football finished 12th in the final coaches poll and 13th in the final AP poll, second-best in the Big 12 and the program’s highest finish since 1986. The rankings reflect the Baylor program’s level of national respect following a season in which head coach Art Briles’ squad matched the program record with 10 wins and Robert Griffin III brought home the program’s first Heisman award.

[The university will honor the 2011 Baylor football team and RG3 in a free event this Saturday at the Ferrell Center; click here for details.]

Then there’s basketball, where both the women (No. 1 in the country for the 10th straight week) and men (up to No. 4 in the nation in both polls this week) are enjoying the best rankings in program history. Head coach Kim Mulkey’s Lady Bears are 15-0 and one of four teams still undefeated; head coach Scott Drew’s Bears are also 15-0 and are one of three undefeated teams remaining. Combined, Baylor’s “big three” sports are 36-0 since Nov. 1 — just an unbelievable number. Following in RG3′s footsteps, Brittney Griner and Perry Jones III are also legitimate national player of the year candidates.

Three other Baylor teams are also among the top 10 in the country — men’s tennis (No. 5 in the preseason rankings),  women’s tennis (No. 6) and equestrian (No. 5). When you look at the success of Baylor’s teams this fall and the history of Baylor’s spring sports, there’s an excellent chance that all 19 varsity sports could make the postseason in 2011-12 — something that’s never happened here before.

Such success has turned the nation’s eyes to Baylor in a new way. From ESPN features (TV and website) to USA Today to papers like the Boston Globe, our student-athletes are introducing people all over the country to Baylor in a positive manner every day.

Lady Bears swat away No. 2 UConn for third win over preseason top-5 opponent this month

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Videos

Brittney Griner vs UConnAre Baylor fans getting spoiled? Since Nov. 1, Baylor football (ranked No. 12), men’s basketball (No. 6) and women’s basketball (No. 1) have combined to go 25-0, including five wins over ranked teams. (Oh, and there was that Heisman award, too.)

That includes the Lady Bears’ win over No. 2 UConn Sunday night, 66-61, the team’s third non-conference game this season against a top-4 preseason opponent. As you may remember, head coach Kim Mulkey’s squad topped the preseason polls, followed by No. 2 Notre Dame (lost to BU 94-81), No. 3 Tennessee (lost to BU — in Knoxville — 76-67) and No. 4 UConn. All three have fallen to the Lady Bears in the last month, as Baylor has run its record to 11-0.

A Ferrell Center-record crowd of 10,627 sold out the arena more than two weeks before the game, a first for the Lady Bears, and a couple million more watched on ESPN as Baylor cemented its No. 1 ranking (which was already unanimous in the AP poll and should be in the coaches poll as well when new rankings come out today and tomorrow).

My favorite tidbit from Sunday night (besides the result)? The Lady Bears have now become such a draw that veteran NBA head coach Jeff Van Gundy, now an ESPN analyst, expressly asked to come to Waco to work this game, and ESPN obliged. Network anchor Linda Cohn also had great things to say about not just Baylor athletics but the entire university in a three-minute highlight package at the top of SportsCenter last night.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun

Fall at Baylor

Today’s the last day of classes before the university shuts down for Thanksgiving, so we’re gonna take a break here on the blog as well. As the Baylor family celebrates on Thursday, there’s certainly plenty to be thankful for!

* A university that is recognized nationally for the value it offers its students;
* A school that believes faith and service are just as important as teaching and research — and that excels at all of them;
* An institution that produces successful alumni in most every field, from education to entertainment to the arts and more.;
* A Baylor family with such strong ties that it draws back alumni from all over the globe;
* A president who uses his resources to serve the university in a million ways;
* Successful sports teams that help build school spirit among students and alumni; and
* Ambassadors like Robert Griffin III who represent Baylor with excellence, integrity and class both on and off the field.

I could go on and on, but you get the idea. I am truly, truly thankful for Baylor University and the Baylor family.

Sic ’em, Bears!
