Christmas carols from BU trumpet students, Lubbock-area grads

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Student life, Videos

Last year, Baylor School of Music professors Mark Schubert and Wiff Rudd challenged their trumpet students to approach a song like a handbell choir — to play the song, “Do-Re-Mi” from The Sound of Music, using a different trumpet for each note. Though challenged, the class eventually accomplished the feat, everyone had fun, and that was that.

Except it wasn’t. Senior music major Taylor Williamson came back a week later with an arrangement for the Baylor Trumpet Studio to perform “Carol of the Bells” in just such a manner. Here’s what they came up:

Meanwhile, the Baylor Women’s Council of Lubbock created their own Baylor Christmas carol for the second year in a row. Some 60-odd Bears, ranging from Class of 1948 to Class of 2012, recorded this video earlier this month at their annual Christmas gathering:

Baylor football headed to postseason for program-record third straight year

Baylor football locker room after becoming bowl-eligible againThe Bears are going bowling again!

With RG3 on the sidelines cheering on his former teammates, Baylor football claimed a thrilling overtime victory versus Texas Tech on Saturday at Cowboys Stadium, 52-45, to clinch the program’s third straight bowl appearance — a first for Baylor.

Where to even begin on this one? After falling behind 21-7 in the first half, the Bears battled back to take their first lead of the game at 35-31 early in the fourth quarter on a 55-yard interception return — one of four turnovers forced by Baylor’s defense on the day. The Bears and Red Raiders then traded leads three more times before a BU field goal tied things up with less than three minutes to go.

The Bears had a chance to win it in regulation, but a 48-yard field goal attempt missed just left. Instead, Baylor scored first in overtime, then batted away a fourth-down Red Raider pass to end the game and give BU its second-straight win over Texas Tech.

The Bears will go for win No. 7 next Saturday (Dec. 1) against No. 21 Oklahoma State at Floyd Casey Stadium; the game is set for 11 a.m. on FX. A victory would give Baylor three straight seasons of 7+ wins — something the program hasn’t seen since 1949-50-51. Got your tickets yet?

Baylor football upsets nation’s No. 1 team for first time in program history

Art Briles after Baylor win over No. 1 KSU

One year ago this weekend, Baylor football shocked the world. Saturday night, the Bears did it again.

For the first time in program history, Baylor took down the No. 1 team in the nation — and the Bears did so handily, beating top-ranked Kansas State 52-24 at Floyd Casey Stadium.

[LINKS: AP recap || Video highlights from Sic 'Em Sports and ESPN || Photos from Baylor Photography and the AP]

The Bears accomplished the feat with a balanced game in which Nick Florence threw for two touchdowns and ran for another while Lache Seastrunk and Glasco Martin combined to rush for nearly 300 yards and four TDs. Meanwhile, the Baylor defense picked off Heisman frontrunner Collin Klein, the Wildcats’ QB, three times — as many interceptions as Klein had thrown all year coming into the night.

Before last season, Baylor hadn’t defeated a top-5 team since 1985; now, BU has won two straight against such opponents. And boy was it fun to see Baylor Nation react… To see the fans rush on the field on a primetime, national ESPN broadcast. To see a Facebook post announcing the score gather 8,000+ likes less than an hour after the game ended. To watch my phone buzz continually the rest of the night from people tweeting their Baylor pride.

And of course, it’s fun to see major websites like ESPN and SI.com splashing “BAYLOR” across their front pages. Perhaps my favorite tweet of the night came from Sports Illustrated: “Waco, Texas: where ranked teams go to lose.”

The Bears still need one more win to clinch a third-straight bowl game, and good crowds in the next two games — next Saturday against Texas Tech at Cowboys Stadium, and Dec. 1 in Waco against Oklahoma State — could help make the difference. Art Briles called Saturday night’s crowd the most energetic he’d seen in Waco; let’s give the Bears that energy every game the rest of the year. Get your tickets now!

Baylor quidditch — yes, quidditch — ranked No. 11 in the country

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun, Videos

You’ll either think this is crazy or crazy-awesome, so I’ll just lay it out there:

Baylor quidditch is ranked No. 11 in the nation.

Yes, quidditch — the sport created for J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books and movies — has been carried over into a real game played by “muggles” (people without magical abilities, in Potter-speak). The International Quidditch Association has an entire rulebook and oversees approximately 1,000 teams across the world, including clubs at universities such as USC, Texas, LSU and Harvard.

Baylor junior Stuart Miller, one of more than 25 students who make up the Baylor Quidditch Association, describes the version played by teams like BU’s as “a combination of dodge ball, rugby, track and lacrosse.” The Bears practice twice a week during the season in Minglewood Bowl (just outside Brooks); tryouts for the spring squad will be held early next semester. Baylor Homecoming 2012: A Social Gathering

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Photo Galleries, Student life, Videos

The way we tell our stories may change, but the feelings stay the same. From the nation’s first collegiate homecoming in 1909 on through the 2012 event this past weekend, Baylor’s richest tradition remains strong as thousands of members of the Baylor family return to campus each year.

[PHOTOS: Wed./Thurs activities (Pigskin, Mass Meeting, etc.) || Fri./Sat. activities (Bonfire, Parade, Football) || More from football's win over Kansas || Waco Tribune-Herald: Bonfire, Parade, Football]

It was fun to follow this year’s Homecoming through the eyes of those attending, be they former, current or future students, through social media — particularly on Twitter and Instagram. (Do a search on either site for “#BUHC12″ to see what I mean.)

Such sites gave a new meaning to the “social gathering” that is Homecoming. Baylor Photography combined some of their own work from this weekend with photos and comments seen online to produce the video above celebrating Homecoming 2012.

Enjoy the video? It’s never too early to start making plans to come for Homecoming 2013!

Moonlight Madness shows off Baylor basketball’s pure athleticism

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Just for Fun, Photo Galleries, Videos

I hadn’t planned to recap Baylor basketball’s Moonlight Madness. Then I saw this photo:

Deuce Bello dunking over 7-1 Isaiah Austin

That’s Baylor sophomore guard Deuce Bello leaping over 7-FOOT-1 freshman Isaiah Austin during the Bears’ dunk contest — and Bello didn’t even win the event. That honor went to senior Cory Jefferson for his high-flying dunk that took off from near the free-throw line.

[SEE: Moonlight Madness highlights or the event in its entirety || Another dunk highlight compilation || More photos from the event]

Baylor fans can expect to see more of that athleticism this winter at the Ferrell Center. Remember, a year ago it was newcomer Pierre Jackson who wowed the crowd in the dunk contest; this year, the 5-foot-10 guard is the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year.

Bello, Jefferson and Jackson were joined in the contest by the reigning national player of the year, Lady Bear senior Brittney Griner. Her 360 dunk, plus another slam over teammate Mariah Chandler, also excited a full house at the Ferrell Center.

We’re barely a week from the men’s first exhibition game and less than two weeks from the national champion women’s season opener, and season tickets are on sale now. In fact, a special promotion running through Oct. 19 is offering men’s season tickets for $111 and women’s for $86.

‘Chicago Fire,’ created by pair of Baylor alums, debuts tonight on NBC

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Videos

Chicago FireFirst Danny Watkins, now Michael Brandt and Derek Haas. I’m not sure what the connection is between Baylor and firefighters, but I like the support they’re showing.

Brandt (BBA ’91, MA ’94) and Haas (BA ’91, MA ’95), the writing duo behind movies such as 2 Fast 2 Furious, 3:10 to Yuma and Wanted, have taken their first step into the world of television as the creators of Chicago Fire, which premieres on NBC tonight. The show — the latest from executive producer Dick Wolf, the man behind the Law & Order franchise — examines the extended family of Chicago Firehouse 51; think ER in a firehouse.

Chicago Fire Department Deputy District Chief Steve Chikerotis serves as a consultant on the show, and he’s been impressed with what he’s seen. “No one’s doing it like they’re doing it,” he told TV Guide. “Chicago Fire is making an attempt to do it real and sell the emotions that go along with it. The average firefighter throughout the nation will be pretty proud of this show, I think.”

Brandt and Haas made sure the BU connections don’t stop with the creators. Randy Flagler, BBA ’92, plays a character named “Capp,” and two Baylor interns worked on the show this past summer. Onscreen, one of the first characters you meet in the pilot, Darden, is named for Baylor prof Bob Darden, and the main characters later meet up at a bar named for Waco favorite Buzzard Billy’s.

The pilot debuts tonight on NBC at 9 p.m. CT; it can also be streamed online at Hulu.com or downloaded free from iTunes.

Retired prof turns tree stump into proclamation of Baylor pride

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Videos

Bear tree carvingA friend of mine noticed it first, right there in Waco’s Castle Heights neighborhood — a live oak tree stump carved into the shape of a bear, complete with paw raised and holding a sign that says “sic ‘em.”

A couple of days later, a KWTX-TV report gave some background, followed by a story in the Waco Tribune-Herald.

The tree-turned-bear stands in the front yard of Dr. Dick Couey, BA ’63, a Baylor graduate and longtime BU professor. “You cut me, I think I would bleed green and gold, because I love Baylor,” he says. “I just thought about a bear, to let people know that that’s part of my life — being a Baylor Bear.”

Couey earned his bachelor’s in religion from Baylor in 1963 and returned as a professor in 1970, teaching an assortment of classes in anatomy, physiology and nutrition until his retirement in 2007. His family tree also bleeds green and gold, as Couey’s daughter, Suzanne Curtis (BSED ’89, MSED ’92), son-in-law William Curtis (BA ’89, MBA ’91) and son Paul Couey (BS ’93) all graduated from Baylor. The Richard Couey Award for Excellence is even given each year in his honor to a Baylor professor by service fraternity Phi Kappa Chi.

How do you show your Baylor pride at home? Click here to submit a picture, and see how others are flinging their green and gold on our Pinterest page.

Sic ’em, Dr. and Mrs. Couey!
