Christmas carols from BU trumpet students, Lubbock-area grads

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Student life, Videos

Last year, Baylor School of Music professors Mark Schubert and Wiff Rudd challenged their trumpet students to approach a song like a handbell choir — to play the song, “Do-Re-Mi” from The Sound of Music, using a different trumpet for each note. Though challenged, the class eventually accomplished the feat, everyone had fun, and that was that.

Except it wasn’t. Senior music major Taylor Williamson came back a week later with an arrangement for the Baylor Trumpet Studio to perform “Carol of the Bells” in just such a manner. Here’s what they came up:

Meanwhile, the Baylor Women’s Council of Lubbock created their own Baylor Christmas carol for the second year in a row. Some 60-odd Bears, ranging from Class of 1948 to Class of 2012, recorded this video earlier this month at their annual Christmas gathering:

Christmas at Baylor in photos, 2012

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Faith, Just for Fun, Photo Galleries, Student life

Christmas on 5th Street 2012

Unseasonably warm temperatures the last few days (including a record-for-the-date 83 degrees on Saturday!) make it feel not so much like Christmas outside. But yet the calendar turns; it’s December, and classes for the fall semester wrapped up yesterday, believe it or not.

But while the weather may make us think more beach than Bethlehem, the decorations around campus definitely say “Christmastime.” From the lights adorning Burleson Quadrangle to the traditional KOT Christmas tree — not to mention the live nativity in front of the SUB for Christmas on 5th Street — it’s beginning to at least look a lot like Christmas.

In case you missed it late last week, the official Baylor Facebook page shared this photo gallery from Christmas on 5th Street and Santa’s Workshop — full of camels and choirs, presents and photo ops, nutcrackers and even St. Nick. (I particularly like the Facebook page’s new cover photo.)

What about Baylor are you thankful for?

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Student life

Fall at BaylorThis blog is filled with reasons to be thankful for Baylor — not just at Thanksgiving, but year-round. However, this time of year is always a good time to step back and think about how we have been blessed.

Parents who are just joining the Baylor family through their students are often best at pointing out what makes Baylor special; here’s one such parent, Betty Rodriguez, sharing why she’s thankful for Baylor.

“Our daughter (class of 2013) fell in love with Baylor from the moment she set foot on this beautiful campus. Our family is mixed with Aggies and Horns, but Amanda set the path towards the first Bear in our family, and we are simply so proud to be part of Baylor Nation.

“Baylor has been so good to our daughter as well as our family. Amanda was the first in the family to travel to China and study abroad last summer, and she had a remarkable experience thanks in part to receiving an academic international scholarship that made it possible. From the care package parties to siblings weekend, we have had a fantastic time being part of this BU family. We take such pride when we say our daughter attends Baylor.”

Steppin’ Out takes nearly 3,000 students out to serve Waco community

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Photo Galleries, Service, Student life

Steppin' Out, Fall 2012Since 1985, the Steppin’ Out tradition has helped Baylor students get out into the Waco community, serving agencies, families, churches and public areas through practical service.

Approximately 2,800 students volunteered this past Saturday across the city, working at 55 different sites with projects ranging from painting homes to reviving yards. Yet the director of Steppin’ Out, senior international business major Erika Sherhart, says it’s not the numbers that matter — it’s what those students do after being exposed to the opportunity.

[Click here to view photos from Saturday's service opportunities.]

“I hope that students take advantage of Steppin’ Out and use it as a stepping stone to serve in other capacities at Baylor as well as in the future,” said Sherhart.

Baylor Homecoming 2012: A Social Gathering

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Photo Galleries, Student life, Videos

The way we tell our stories may change, but the feelings stay the same. From the nation’s first collegiate homecoming in 1909 on through the 2012 event this past weekend, Baylor’s richest tradition remains strong as thousands of members of the Baylor family return to campus each year.

[PHOTOS: Wed./Thurs activities (Pigskin, Mass Meeting, etc.) || Fri./Sat. activities (Bonfire, Parade, Football) || More from football's win over Kansas || Waco Tribune-Herald: Bonfire, Parade, Football]

It was fun to follow this year’s Homecoming through the eyes of those attending, be they former, current or future students, through social media — particularly on Twitter and Instagram. (Do a search on either site for “#BUHC12″ to see what I mean.)

Such sites gave a new meaning to the “social gathering” that is Homecoming. Baylor Photography combined some of their own work from this weekend with photos and comments seen online to produce the video above celebrating Homecoming 2012.

Enjoy the video? It’s never too early to start making plans to come for Homecoming 2013!

Follow ‘BaylorUniversity’ on Instagram

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Student life

BaylorUniversity on InstagramI hope that you’ll be among the thousands of Baylor alums returning to campus this weekend for Homecoming. On the other hand, obviously not everyone can make it back as often as they’d like.

Thankfully, the Internet (and specifically social media) continues to make it easier than ever for us here on campus to bring Baylor to you. You want to keep up with BU via Facebook? No problem. Twitter? Follow @Baylor, @BaylorProud, @BaylorAthletics and plenty of other official accounts. YouTube? Check. Pinterest? You bet.

Baylor’s latest leap into social media is via Instagram, a mobile app built around photo sharing. Baylor Photography is daily sharing photos of life around campus: athletic events, shots of our beautiful campus, students on the move, etc. To follow along, download the free Instagram app (available for iOS and Android users), then use it to search for “bayloruniversity” and click “follow.” The app makes it easy for you to like, comment on and tweet your favorite photos. (You can also see the photos online at baylor.edu/instagram.)

It’s not the same as being on campus — nothing can replace the experience of an in-person visit — but it’s the next best thing.

And as you tweet or Instagram this weekend, don’t forget to use the “#BUHC12″ hashtag!

How time flies! Three years ago this time, the official Baylor Facebook page had just gotten off the ground; now, it’s topped 100,000 likes!

That’s 100,000 people — alumni, students, parents and others — who have publicly affiliated themselves with Baylor. 100,000 people who have chosen to regularly read and celebrate the good things happening among the Baylor family. 100,000 people who are staying connected to Baylor, participating and engaging with the university and other Bears.

To those 100,000-plus — thanks for joining us on the journey! And if you’re not among those numbers, consider checking out Baylor’s Facebook page and hitting that old “like” button to follow along.

Baylor junior wins one of 40 EPA fellowships nationwide

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Honors, Research, Student life

David DreierJunior David Dreier’s experience in Baylor’s environmental health science program — one of only 30 such accredited programs nationwide — played a large part in the North Texas native earning a prestigious Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) fellowship from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Only about 40 students from all over the country earned the competitive EPA honor, which provides scholarship support up to nearly $50,000 over the next two years as the recipients complete their degrees. Dreier, an environmental health science major in Baylor’s Honors Program, also will be offered a paid internship at an EPA facility next summer.

Dreier credited his professors, “whose support and guidance were essential to this accomplishment,” but those mentors deflected the praise toward the university as a whole.

“We share David’s excitement because the EPA GRO Undergraduate Fellowship represents one of the premiere research awards for undergraduate students,” said Dr. Bryan Brooks, Dreier’s honors thesis advisor. “Such an outstanding honor provides gold-standard evidence of fruit from Baylor’s commitment to undergraduate research training and integration of undergraduates in active research teams.”

Sic ’em, David!
