Baylor students join ‘Harlem Shake’ craze

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun, Student life, Videos

The Today Show has done one. Ditto for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Even my great-aunt’s retirement community has shared their version online. So you knew it was just a matter of time until Baylor students got in on the act — and when they did, they did it with style.

More than 100 Baylor students gathered at the Judge Baylor statue to perform their version of the Harlem Shake, a 30-second dance that has gone viral across the Internet. (For more background, here’s what Wikipedia has to say about the craze.) Here’s what these students came up with:

In the approximately 60 hours since the video was posted, it has already been viewed more than 43,000 times. (And if you enjoyed that, check out Baylor Theatre’s version, straight from their production of the 1950s-era play “Born Yesterday.”)

Hankamer School of Business looks toward new home on east side of campus

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Pro Futuris, Student life

Exterior rendering of new home for Baylor's Hankamer School of Business

After Baylor Stadium, what’s next for the Baylor campus? How about a new home for the Hankamer School of Business?

At their February meeting, Regents approved fundraising for a new facility on the east side of campus (near the Baylor Sciences Building and the upcoming East Village Residential Community) that would offer nearly 40 percent more space for business school students and faculty.

The new 275,000-square-foot business school facility would be roughly half the size of the BSB but twice the size of the McLane Student Life Center and Umphrey Law Center, three of the university’s largest non-athletic construction projects of the last decade. It would also make the current Hankamer-Cashion space occupied by the business school available for other academic needs on campus, benefitting students across disciplines.

Interior rendering for Baylor's new Hankamer School of Business homeBaylor’s business school was established 90 years ago at the behest of President Samuel Palmer Brooks, and over the years, it has been housed in Carroll Library, Old Main and the SUB, among other locations, before moving into its current space in 1960.

Today, the Hankamer School of Business is home to approximately 3,000 Baylor students, accounting for some 20% of the student body. Undergraduates choose from 24 major areas of study, including the No. 2 entrepreneurship program in the country and a top-25 accounting program; graduate programs offer 13 different master’s areas of study and one PhD program.

Happy 60th anniversary, Dr Pepper Hour!

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Photo Galleries, Student life

Dr Pepper Hour 60th anniversary

In 1953, a Baylor staff member began to serve “frosted Coke” to students in the still-new Student Union Building’s Barfield Drawing Room. The informal gathering offered students a chance to socialize and escape the typical school day.

60 years later, that tradition continues — every Tuesday, from 3-4 p.m., and still in Barfield Drawing Room. Originally known as “Coke Hour,” the event switched to “Dr Pepper Hour” in 1997 when the Waco-born beverage became the university’s official soft drink. Students, faculty and staff celebrated the 60th anniversary of the tradition last week with a special hour featuring special treats, Dr Pepper-themed displays, and of course the familiar ice cream floats.

[Click here for a photo gallery from the 60th anniversary Dr Pepper Hour.]

Dr Pepper Hour is now one of Baylor’s oldest traditions, having started the same year as All-University Sing. (For comparison, the “sic ‘em, Bears!” yell didn’t come along until 1960, and the Baylor Line wasn’t started until a decade after that.)

Sing 2013 tickets go on sale this week

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Student life, Videos

The spring semester began Monday, but the students prepping for All-University Sing 2013 couldn’t even wait that long. Rehearsals for this year’s show began over the weekend — and performances are just a month away!

Tickets for Sing 2013 go on sale this week — first to current students on Thursday, then to the general public beginning Friday. All six shows tend to fill quickly, so don’t delay. Performances are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23.

While you wait for this year’s shows, take a look back at last year’s performances:

Is this the most Baylor Proud wedding ever?

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Photo Galleries, Student life, Videos

Baylor Proud wedding

If there was ever a Baylor Proud wedding, it must have been this one.

When Brad (BBA ’08) and Stephanie (BS ’08, MS ’10, PhD ’12) Doherty got engaged, they decided the wedding should be back where they met and started dating — on the Baylor campus. The couple shot engagement photos on campus (this is my favorite) and booked Miller Chapel for the big day, but the Baylor theme didn’t stop there:

  • The wedding colors were green and gold.
  • The new couple led a “sic ‘em” immediately after being named husband and wife.
  • The recessional was “That Good Old Baylor Line.”
  • Nine members of the wedding party were also Baylor alums (including three from Stephanie’s Welcome Week group).
  • After the ceremony, everyone in attendance who attended Baylor posed for a group photo at the Judge Baylor statue.
  • The groom’s cake was the university seal, and the reception featured Dr Pepper floats.
  • The fight song played during the reception.
  • Stephanie wore a Baylor garter.
  • As the couple left the reception, guests waved green-and-gold pom-poms.
  • Even the getaway car (a family member’s van) was green and gold.

Perhaps this will give some great ideas to Baylor students Austin Aeschbacher and Christine Cookus. Austin, a senior music education major, proposed to Christine, a junior music education major, during the Baylor Symphony Orchestra’s annual Christmas at Baylor concert last month. [See the video.]

Baylor named among nation’s best colleges for African Americans

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Honors, Student life

Baylor graduationFor 20 years, M. Clayton & Associates has studied colleges and universities across the United States, seeking to find institutions committed to helping African American students graduate. From more than 800 schools nationwide, they’ve published a list of the “88 Best Colleges for African Americans” — a list that includes Baylor University.

To make the list, each school had to meet a minimum graduation rate for African American students and offer a sizable African American student community. Baylor is one of just four Texas universities to appear on the list (along with Rice, Texas Lutheran and UT-Tyler) and is the only Big 12 member recognized.

African Americans make up about 8% of Baylor’s undergraduate student body; for reference, the rest of the undergraduate breakdown is 65% white, 14% Hispanic, 8% Asian, 5% other/unknown. Overall, Baylor’s racial minority percentage is around 34%, making our student body the second-most diverse in the Big 12.

Baylor Law provides Christmas gifts for nearly 1,000 students at local elementary

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Service, Student life, Videos

Just before Christmas, the generosity of the Baylor Law School family allowed law school representatives to visit a local elementary school with a new, wrapped toy for every child in the school. (See the video above and this report from KWTX.)

Baylor Law faculty, staff and students raised more than $4,000, which was used to purchase toys for each of the school’s nearly 1,000 students plus 400 pairs of gloves for the children. Twenty students at Bell’s Hill Elementary had specific wishes fulfilled — wishes like these:

  • “All I want for Christmas is a crib for my two-month-old sister, because she has to sleep on the floor because she falls off of the regular bed and I don’t want something to happen to her.”
  • “I want a heater for Christmas for my cousin, because he is sick and if he gets cold he will have to go to the hospital.”
  • “I want silverware and dishes for Christmas to give to my mom because I love her so much, and she wishes she could get this stuff but she doesn’t have the money.”
  • “All I want for Christmas is clothes because I only have a little bit of clothes.”
  • “All I want for Christmas is to give toys to St. Francis Children’s Hospital because my cousin died from cancer and I want to give toys to the kids in the hospital.”

700+ Baylor students headed west for Holiday Bowl

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Student life

Baylor Holiday Bowl bus design

When Baylor football takes the field at Qualcomm Stadium on Dec. 27 for the Holiday Bowl, they will be greeted by an impressive turnout of Baylor students.

More than 700 students — about 5% of the student body — purchased tickets through the university (in addition to those who bought tickets elsewhere) for a bowl game to be played some 1,400 miles from campus.

Almost 300 students — six buses worth — are taking advantage of a Baylor travel package in which they will board buses (like those pictured above) in Waco the morning of Dec. 26 for a 21-hour ride to San Diego.

They are scheduled to arrive in time for the Port of San Diego Big Bay Balloon Parade on Dec. 27, in which some students will join the Golden Wave Band, the Spirit Squads, President Ken Starr and the Baylor Bear balloon. Word is that this will be the first university balloon in the parade’s 22-year history. (FYI, the parade will be nationally televised on USA Network the following day, Dec. 28, at 8 a.m. ET/PT, so set your DVRs.)

After the parade, students will then attend the game that evening, spend the night in San Diego, and leave for Waco the next afternoon. Special thanks to lead donors Kirk and Carol Townsend and supporting donors Ken and Alice Starr and Ken and Celia Carlile for helping offset the costs of the trip to make it more affordable to our students.

Christmas carols from BU trumpet students, Lubbock-area grads

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Student life, Videos

Last year, Baylor School of Music professors Mark Schubert and Wiff Rudd challenged their trumpet students to approach a song like a handbell choir — to play the song, “Do-Re-Mi” from The Sound of Music, using a different trumpet for each note. Though challenged, the class eventually accomplished the feat, everyone had fun, and that was that.

Except it wasn’t. Senior music major Taylor Williamson came back a week later with an arrangement for the Baylor Trumpet Studio to perform “Carol of the Bells” in just such a manner. Here’s what they came up:

Meanwhile, the Baylor Women’s Council of Lubbock created their own Baylor Christmas carol for the second year in a row. Some 60-odd Bears, ranging from Class of 1948 to Class of 2012, recorded this video earlier this month at their annual Christmas gathering:
