Kappa Sigma at Sing 2013

Now in its seventh decade(!), All-University Sing remains one of Baylor’s grandest traditions, as hundreds of students practice for weeks before putting on six nights of Broadway-style song-and-dance medleys.

Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center provides boost for Baylor tennis

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Photo Galleries, Videos

Jim and Nell Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center

For years, when inclement weather struck during a Baylor tennis match, the teams had to pack up and drive an hour and a half north to use an indoor facility in Ennis, Texas. The lack of nearby indoor courts has also prevented Baylor from hosting NCAA championship final rounds.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters such as Jim (BBA ’58) and Nell Hawkins, those problems are now in the past. Head coach Matt Knoll’s squad held its first match in the new Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center Friday night, drawing 700+ fans for a 7-0 sweep of SMU. [See photos and video from the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center debut.]

Fans sat and stood two-, sometimes three-deep in the viewing area to take in the first on-campus indoor match in program history. The state-of-the-art facility will allow the Baylor men’s and women’s tennis programs to practice and play year-round, regardless of weather.

Hawkins Indoor Tennis CenterThat can only help two of Baylor’s premier athletic programs. Since 2000, the men’s and women’s tennis teams have combined to win 31 Big 12 team titles and four NCAA titles. The Lady Bears have reached at least the Sweet 16 each of the last eight years, while the men are aiming for their 12th straight Sweet 16 appearance this spring.

Jim and Nell Hawkins are longtime Baylor supporters, having faithfully supported scholarships for student-athletes and business school students as well as excellence funds across multiple sports and even mission trips by Baylor’s Sports Ministry Teams. Their gifts provided the practice courts for Baylor’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, and their first major gift to Baylor Athletics funded the scoreboard at Floyd Casey Stadium.

Happy 60th anniversary, Dr Pepper Hour!

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Photo Galleries, Student life

Dr Pepper Hour 60th anniversary

In 1953, a Baylor staff member began to serve “frosted Coke” to students in the still-new Student Union Building’s Barfield Drawing Room. The informal gathering offered students a chance to socialize and escape the typical school day.

60 years later, that tradition continues — every Tuesday, from 3-4 p.m., and still in Barfield Drawing Room. Originally known as “Coke Hour,” the event switched to “Dr Pepper Hour” in 1997 when the Waco-born beverage became the university’s official soft drink. Students, faculty and staff celebrated the 60th anniversary of the tradition last week with a special hour featuring special treats, Dr Pepper-themed displays, and of course the familiar ice cream floats.

[Click here for a photo gallery from the 60th anniversary Dr Pepper Hour.]

Dr Pepper Hour is now one of Baylor’s oldest traditions, having started the same year as All-University Sing. (For comparison, the “sic ‘em, Bears!” yell didn’t come along until 1960, and the Baylor Line wasn’t started until a decade after that.)

BBC names Armstrong Browning one of America’s 5 most beautiful college libraries

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Honors, Photo Galleries

BBC honors Armstrong Browning LibraryI used to refer to Armstrong Browning Library as Baylor’s “hidden jewel.” But given the growing number of honors the library has received of late, I don’t think that’s accurate anymore.

The latest recognition came from the BBC (in conjunction with Lonely Planet), which named Armstrong Browning one of America’s five most beautiful college libraries. (ABL was joined on the list by libraries at Johns Hopkins, Cornell, UCLA and the Rhode Island School of Design.)

If you’ve never been inside the library, you’re missing out. Armstrong Browning is open 9-5 on weekdays and 10-2 on Saturday; call ahead (254-710-4960) to inquire about a free guided tour. Until you can make it down, this photo gallery will give you some sense of the ABL’s beauty.

Is this the most Baylor Proud wedding ever?

Baylor Proud wedding

If there was ever a Baylor Proud wedding, it must have been this one.

When Brad (BBA ’08) and Stephanie (BS ’08, MS ’10, PhD ’12) Doherty got engaged, they decided the wedding should be back where they met and started dating — on the Baylor campus. The couple shot engagement photos on campus (this is my favorite) and booked Miller Chapel for the big day, but the Baylor theme didn’t stop there:

  • The wedding colors were green and gold.
  • The new couple led a “sic ‘em” immediately after being named husband and wife.
  • The recessional was “That Good Old Baylor Line.”
  • Nine members of the wedding party were also Baylor alums (including three from Stephanie’s Welcome Week group).
  • After the ceremony, everyone in attendance who attended Baylor posed for a group photo at the Judge Baylor statue.
  • The groom’s cake was the university seal, and the reception featured Dr Pepper floats.
  • The fight song played during the reception.
  • Stephanie wore a Baylor garter.
  • As the couple left the reception, guests waved green-and-gold pom-poms.
  • Even the getaway car (a family member’s van) was green and gold.

Perhaps this will give some great ideas to Baylor students Austin Aeschbacher and Christine Cookus. Austin, a senior music education major, proposed to Christine, a junior music education major, during the Baylor Symphony Orchestra’s annual Christmas at Baylor concert last month. [See the video.]

Football pounds No.17 UCLA, 49-26, to win 2012 Holiday Bowl

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors, Photo Galleries, Videos

Jarred Salubi and Nick Florence with Holiday Bowl trophy

Under Art Briles, the success of RG3 and Nick Florence has helped Baylor football become known for its passing. But Thursday, it was the Bears’ rushing game and defense that stood out most as Baylor dominated Pac-12 runner-up UCLA, 49-26, in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl.

Sure, Florence passed for almost 200 yards and two touchdowns without a turnover as the Bears won back-to-back bowls for the first time since 1985-86. But it was the rushing attack, led by Lache Seastrunk and Glasco Martin, that carried the offense, putting up 306 yards and five touchdowns on the ground as the Bears coasted past the 17th-ranked Bruins to end the season on a four-game winning streak.

As it did against No. 1 Kansas State earlier this season, Baylor’s defense again stepped up, holding UCLA’s all-time leading rusher to just 34 yards on 14 carries and taking down the Bruins’ quarterback six times after tallying just 13 sacks through the Bears’ first 12 games.

It’s worth remembering that this Baylor team could easily have folded in mid November, when the Bears were just 4-5, had lost four of their last five games, and faced three ranked opponents to finish the year. Instead, Briles’ squad toughened up, won all three games to get bowl-eligible, then blew out UCLA in front of a Bruin-friendly southern-California crowd and a national ESPN audience.

A few notes from the day: Briles joined Grant Teaff (1985-86 and 1979-80) and Frank Bridges (1921-22) as the only coaches ever to have led Baylor to back-to-back seasons of 8+ wins… Florence set a new school record for passing yards in a season, finishing the year with 4,309 yards passing to break RG3′s total from his Heisman campaign… After totaling just 181 yards rushing through the end of October, Seastrunk came on late to finish his sophomore season with 1,030 yards and became the Bears’ third-straight 1,000-yard rusher (just the ninth in BU history).

What a year… A special thanks to Baylor football’s outgoing seniors for their efforts in making this the most successful three-year period in program history, and for taking us along for the ride. Amazing to think that the next senior class could leave Baylor knowing nothing but bowl games — and that the class after that will get to play in the gorgeous new Baylor Stadium. (Speaking of which, have you ordered your Stadium Brick yet?)

A great big sic ’em to Baylor’s coaching staff, players and support staff, plus all of Baylor Nation that turned out or tuned in for this game — especially the students who bussed 26 hours to get to the game in-person. In short…

Christmas at Baylor in photos, 2012

Christmas on 5th Street 2012

Unseasonably warm temperatures the last few days (including a record-for-the-date 83 degrees on Saturday!) make it feel not so much like Christmas outside. But yet the calendar turns; it’s December, and classes for the fall semester wrapped up yesterday, believe it or not.

But while the weather may make us think more beach than Bethlehem, the decorations around campus definitely say “Christmastime.” From the lights adorning Burleson Quadrangle to the traditional KOT Christmas tree — not to mention the live nativity in front of the SUB for Christmas on 5th Street — it’s beginning to at least look a lot like Christmas.

In case you missed it late last week, the official Baylor Facebook page shared this photo gallery from Christmas on 5th Street and Santa’s Workshop — full of camels and choirs, presents and photo ops, nutcrackers and even St. Nick. (I particularly like the Facebook page’s new cover photo.)

Baylor football headed to postseason for program-record third straight year

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors, Photo Galleries, Videos

Baylor football locker room after becoming bowl-eligible againThe Bears are going bowling again!

With RG3 on the sidelines cheering on his former teammates, Baylor football claimed a thrilling overtime victory versus Texas Tech on Saturday at Cowboys Stadium, 52-45, to clinch the program’s third straight bowl appearance — a first for Baylor.

Where to even begin on this one? After falling behind 21-7 in the first half, the Bears battled back to take their first lead of the game at 35-31 early in the fourth quarter on a 55-yard interception return — one of four turnovers forced by Baylor’s defense on the day. The Bears and Red Raiders then traded leads three more times before a BU field goal tied things up with less than three minutes to go.

[LINKS: AP recap || Video highlights from ESPN and FOX || Interviews with Art Briles and Nick Florence || Photos from Baylor Photography and the AP]

The Bears had a chance to win it in regulation, but a 48-yard field goal attempt missed just left. Instead, Baylor scored first in overtime, then batted away a fourth-down Red Raider pass to end the game and give BU its second-straight win over Texas Tech.

The Bears will go for win No. 7 next Saturday (Dec. 1) against No. 21 Oklahoma State at Floyd Casey Stadium; the game is set for 11 a.m. on FX. A victory would give Baylor three straight seasons of 7+ wins — something the program hasn’t seen since 1949-50-51. Got your tickets yet?

Baylor football upsets nation’s No. 1 team for first time in program history

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Photo Galleries, Videos

Art Briles after Baylor win over No. 1 KSU

One year ago this weekend, Baylor football shocked the world. Saturday night, the Bears did it again.

For the first time in program history, Baylor took down the No. 1 team in the nation — and the Bears did so handily, beating top-ranked Kansas State 52-24 at Floyd Casey Stadium.

[LINKS: AP recap || Video highlights from Sic 'Em Sports and ESPN || Photos from Baylor Photography and the AP]

The Bears accomplished the feat with a balanced game in which Nick Florence threw for two touchdowns and ran for another while Lache Seastrunk and Glasco Martin combined to rush for nearly 300 yards and four TDs. Meanwhile, the Baylor defense picked off Heisman frontrunner Collin Klein, the Wildcats’ QB, three times — as many interceptions as Klein had thrown all year coming into the night.

Before last season, Baylor hadn’t defeated a top-5 team since 1985; now, BU has won two straight against such opponents. And boy was it fun to see Baylor Nation react… To see the fans rush on the field on a primetime, national ESPN broadcast. To see a Facebook post announcing the score gather 8,000+ likes less than an hour after the game ended. To watch my phone buzz continually the rest of the night from people tweeting their Baylor pride.

And of course, it’s fun to see major websites like ESPN and SI.com splashing “BAYLOR” across their front pages. Perhaps my favorite tweet of the night came from Sports Illustrated: “Waco, Texas: where ranked teams go to lose.”

The Bears still need one more win to clinch a third-straight bowl game, and good crowds in the next two games — next Saturday against Texas Tech at Cowboys Stadium, and Dec. 1 in Waco against Oklahoma State — could help make the difference. Art Briles called Saturday night’s crowd the most energetic he’d seen in Waco; let’s give the Bears that energy every game the rest of the year. Get your tickets now!
