A look back at Homecoming 2009

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Photo Galleries, Student life

Homecoming 2009Hopefully you were among the thousands of Baylor alums who were able to make it back this weekend for the University’s 100th annual Homecoming. Campus (and, indeed, all of Waco) swarmed with activity as Bears past, present and future enjoyed all the usual events, from Pigskin to Bonfire to the Homecoming Parade to the football game, with plenty of other gatherings sprinkled in between.

We’ve rounded up a slideshow of our favorite photos from Homecoming 2009; if that’s not enough, the Waco Tribune-Herald has even more photos for you here, here, here and here. And you’ll definitely want to watch Baylor Photography’s two-minute time-lapse recap of the weekend here.

Elementary teacher works Baylor into her students’ education

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Photo Galleries

opp-univ-oct09In recent years, many educators have learned that preparing students for college doesn’t begin in high school; promoting post-secondary education increasingly begins in junior high and even elementary school.

As part of a program called “Opportunity University,” each classroom at Swinburn Elementary in Tulia, Texas, adopts a college or university. Debbie Barnes, a fourth-grade math teacher at Swinburn, chose Baylor because of the great experiences her two daughters (one a recent graduate, the other a junior) have had as Bears. As you can see in this photo gallery, she has decked out her classroom in green and gold, teaching these little ones early what being a Baylor Bear is all about. She’s been able to share Baylor materials with the high school counselor, and says she even works Baylor into math problems!

Sic ’em, Ms. Barnes!

Happy 100th birthday, Baylor nursing!

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Alumni, Photo Galleries

LHSON Alumni ReunionA century ago, Baylor began training nurses in Dallas to serve in the Baptist General Convention of Texas’ new Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium (which would later become Baylor Hospital and now lives as the Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas). Today, that school — now Baylor’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing — has more than 300 students pursuing a bachelor of science or master of science in nursing. (For more history, check out the Mayborn Museum’s exhibit.)

Baylor has always produced excellent servant leaders, perhaps being most recognized over the years for its pastors and teachers. But nurses should not be left out of that group, as the nursing school’s 4,000-plus graduates can attest, having spent their lives in service that includes two world wars and countless hospitals over the past 100 years.

As part of the LHSON’s year-long centennial celebration, alumni from across the years gathered in Dallas last weekend. Participants enjoyed dinners, breakout sessions on some of the issues facing today’s nurses, and a tour of the school’s facilities, including the new simulation labs. (Click here for a photo gallery from the weekend’s events.)

Faces of the Baylor Line, Class of 2013

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Just for Fun, Photo Galleries, Student life

Faces of the Baylor LineBaylor football hosts the Kent State Golden Flashes tomorrow in the Bears’ final non-conference game of the season. Both tomorrow’s game (6 p.m., FSN Southwest) and the following week’s Big 12 opener at Oklahoma (2:30 p.m., ABC regional broadcast) have been picked up for television, so if you can’t make it to Waco or Norman to cheer on the Bears, tune in!

The Baylor Line has certainly turned out in excellent numbers in the Bears’ first two home games, and I expect the same to hold true tomorrow. Baylor Photography compiled this slideshow that gives you a glimpse at the students who make up this year’s line — mostly members of the Class of 2013. (The audio comes from BaylorBears.com’s “Sounds of Baylor” page.) As you’ll see, the slideshow moves fast — with over 3,000 freshmen plus transfers, the Line is as big as ever this year! For more Line photos, check out the galleries on Baylor’s Facebook page.

Thousands of moms and dads visit for Parents Weekend

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Photo Galleries, Student life

Baylor Parents Weekend 2009It’s been awhile since my mother came to visit me as a student during Baylor’s Parents Weekend, but I still remember how much fun it was to show her around campus (a far different experience than when we visited during Orientation, since I now actually knew where things were located) and introduce her to some of my professors at the Saturday morning breakfast.

Thousands of parents visited Waco last weekend for Parents Weekend 2009 and enjoyed similar experiences — attending the University talent show, After Dark; a dessert party outside the Baylor Sciences Building; Parent-Faculty Coffee in Burleson Quadrangle Saturday morning; Dinner on the Grounds on Founders Mall; and of course the football game at Floyd Casey Stadium. (See photos from the weekend here.)

During the game, the Baylor Parents League recognized Sandy and Gretchen McCormack as Baylor’s 2009 Parents of the Year. Sandy and Gretchen (both c/o ‘82) aren’t the only Bears in the family; they’ve also passed the tradition along to their children: Wes, BBA ‘08; Brandal, a Baylor junior; Clark, a Baylor freshman; and Arden, their “Baylor-Bear-to-be.”

As a Baylor graduate (and therefore the child of a Baylor parent), thank you to not only the McCormacks but all Baylor parents for all that you do to support your sons and daughters here. We hope you enjoyed your weekend!

Nursing school dedicates new Success Center in Dallas

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Photo Galleries, Student life

Louise Herrington School of Nursing Success CenterHaving seen the difference that Baylor’s Paul L. Foster Success Center has made for students here in Waco, the University’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing (located in Dallas) recognized that their students could also benefit from such a set-up. Friday, that desire became a reality as the nursing school dedicated the Barnabas Success Center and the Diane Roose Brinkman Study Room. (Click here for a photo gallery from the event.)

“I can think of no better birthday present for our students than the gift of success,” said Dean Judy Lott; Baylor’s School of Nursing is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. Nursing school administrators worked closely with staff from the Foster Success Center to re-create those things that would translate to the Dallas campus — things like quiet study areas, individual testing sites and free tutoring services. Such offerings have made the Foster Success Center a, well, success here since it opened two years ago.

Bears grateful for Baylor family’s support on anniversary of Hurricane Ike

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Photo Galleries

The Ethridge familyA year ago tomorrow, Hurricane Ike made landfall, devastating much of the Texas coast near Galveston. Here at Baylor, the University immediately sprung into action, providing counselors and financial aid for students whose families suffered in the storm and working to help others from the coast who needed assistance.

Down in Galveston, a family of Bears fought their way back home to find their surfside store, Ocean Oso’s, surrounded by a sea of destruction. Brian (BBA ‘95) and Kristen (BA ‘99) Ethridge had opened the shop four years ago on Galveston’s Stewart Beach. As Ike approached, Kristen and the couple’s six-month-old daughter, Carrie, evacuated to Kristen’s parents house in Katy while Brian and an employee boarded up and packed away as much merchandise as possible. Brian then headed to his parents’ house in Waco to wait out the storm.

Even before Ike landed, the couple received offers of assistance from Baylor friends; their fellow tailgaters volunteered to help clean up as soon as the storm passed. As it turned out, it was almost six weeks before the Ethridges were able to return to the island, even longer before electricity was restored and they could clean out the store, and five months before they could move back home. But thanks to friends and family, a year later, things are looking up. The store re-opened in March, and 2009 has proved to be a strong season for Ocean Oso’s, as travelers returned to Galveston — including many of the couple’s Baylor friends who came down on vacation. The store may even be able to expand its offerings next year. (See a photo gallery of the store before and after the storm here.)

What a great example of the Baylor family coming together! It’s so reassuring to know that should my family need it, there’s a community of Bears out there ready and willing to help.

Welcome Week continues to help new students feel at home at Baylor

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun, Photo Galleries, Student life

Welcome Week 2009Welcome Week will always have a special place in my heart — not only because it served as my introduction to college life, but also because I met the guys who would be come my best friends — indeed, my groomsmen many years later — during those first few days at Baylor.

Even with the addition and growing popularity of Baylor Line Camp, Welcome Week still serves an important role in helping new students adjust to campus and college life before the entire student body arrives and classes start. (See photos from this year’s events here.)

From the President’s Picnic to small-group activities, the Big Event at the Ferrell Center to the Candlelight Ceremony at the Marina, most Welcome Weeks traditions remain the same, continuing to, well, welcome students to Baylor much like they did when I was a freshman 13(!) years ago. Even little things, like having dinner at the home of a faculty or staff member or serenading another residence hall, leave lasting memories; may this year’s freshmen remember Baylor as fondly after they graduate!

Move-In Day welcomes Class of 2013 to Baylor

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun, Photo Galleries, Student life

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 3,000 freshmen are experiencing their first day of college classes today at Baylor (meet a few of them here, here and here). That means that late last week, even more students (plus family and friends) descended on Waco for Move-In Day 2009!

For the uninitiated, Move-In Day at Baylor is a little different than at most universities. Hundreds of students, faculty, staff and members of the Waco community pitch in to help new students get settled in their residence halls; parents simply pull up to the curb, and volunteers swarm in to carry all the student’s belongings up to their room. By the time Mom or Dad park the car, the student will find all their things already delivered to the room — a blessing anywhere, but especially in the Texas summer heat!

Baylor Photography not only recorded the events for this photo gallery; they went a step further, creating this time-lapse video as one pair of girls moved into Collins Residence Hall. As you’ll see, this is clearly the most decked out room on campus. If only my roommate and I had been so lucky, back in Martin Room 130 so many years ago!

Sic ’em, Move-In Day volunteers and the class of 2013!

Mayborn exhibit celebrates 100 years of Baylor nursing

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Photo Galleries

Nursing exhibit at MaybornA century ago, nurses wore blue-and-white striped dresses and starched aprons. Their duties often included cooking for patients as well as caring for them — and nurses gave up nursing if they married. These days, nurses wear scrubs, train on simulator “patients” and have careers which may include military duty. Their ranks — unlike in the early days — include men. And marriage doesn’t come between nurses and their desire to serve.

Through all those changes, Baylor’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing has helped prepare students to serve. One of the oldest nurse training programs in the state, the LHSON is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year. As part of the celebration, Baylor’s Mayborn Museum debuted a new exhibit looking back at the history of Baylor nursing earlier this week. “Celebrating a Century of Service” will run through April 18, 2010, in the History of Baylor University Exhibit at the Mayborn. (For a sneak peek at the exhibit, enjoy this photo gallery from the ribbon-cutting.)

Interestingly, during the capital campaign for the Mayborn Museum, the Baylor exhibit hall was made possible through a donation by Marie and John Houser Chiles, who are also members of the nursing school’s Dean’s Board and active supporters of the LHSON.
