‘1 2 3 Baylor’ introduces our littlest Bears to counting and BU

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun

1 2 3 Baylor, A Little Bear Counting BookJust as B is for Baylor introduced future Bears to the alphabet through green and gold lenses, so a new board book, 1 2 3 Baylor, uses familiar Baylor images to teach a younger set simple counting from 1 to 10.

From “1 statue” (of Judge Baylor, of course) to “2 bears” (Joy and Lady) on up to “10 students” (in their Line jerseys), the book allows parents to share their love of Baylor with even the tiniest little Bears.

The simple text (little more than the counting phrases) is accompanied by cute (and wonderfully minimalist) illustrations from Baylor alum Matt Wiede, BFA ’02, of Wiede Design Group.

The book is printed by Baylor University Press on their Big Bear Books label, along with such other offerings as B is for Baylor, coffee table photobook Baylor: A Legacy of Spirit, Tradition, Beauty and other tales of BU history. 1 2 3 Baylor is available straight from Baylor Press or from the Baylor Bookstore, Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Sic ’em, little Bears!

Retired prof turns tree stump into proclamation of Baylor pride

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Videos

Bear tree carvingA friend of mine noticed it first, right there in Waco’s Castle Heights neighborhood — a live oak tree stump carved into the shape of a bear, complete with paw raised and holding a sign that says “sic ‘em.”

A couple of days later, a KWTX-TV report gave some background, followed by a story in the Waco Tribune-Herald.

The tree-turned-bear stands in the front yard of Dr. Dick Couey, BA ’63, a Baylor graduate and longtime BU professor. “You cut me, I think I would bleed green and gold, because I love Baylor,” he says. “I just thought about a bear, to let people know that that’s part of my life — being a Baylor Bear.”

Couey earned his bachelor’s in religion from Baylor in 1963 and returned as a professor in 1970, teaching an assortment of classes in anatomy, physiology and nutrition until his retirement in 2007. His family tree also bleeds green and gold, as Couey’s daughter, Suzanne Curtis (BSED ’89, MSED ’92), son-in-law William Curtis (BA ’89, MBA ’91) and son Paul Couey (BS ’93) all graduated from Baylor. The Richard Couey Award for Excellence is even given each year in his honor to a Baylor professor by service fraternity Phi Kappa Chi.

How do you show your Baylor pride at home? Click here to submit a picture, and see how others are flinging their green and gold on our Pinterest page.

Sic ’em, Dr. and Mrs. Couey!

Speaking of the game… Did you catch the new Baylor commercial during the broadcast?

So you think you know Baylor? Test yourself.

About Baylor

Did you know Baylor offered the first law school in Texas? That Presidents Harry S Truman, Dwight Eisenhower and Lyndon B. Johnson all visited Baylor while in office? That Pat Neff Hall was first lit green after a Baylor victory in College Station “as a beacon home for all the students who had made the trip to foreign lands to witness the victory”?

If not, you might enjoy clicking around the new “About Baylor” section of the university’s website. I know what you’re thinking: “Isn’t the ‘about us’ page usually the most boring part of a website?” Yes, sometimes. But not this one.

My favorite part is the “Baylor Campus: Then and Now.” You’ve seen those Chevy commercials mixing old and new photos? This is like that; you can slide a marker back and forth to see shots of Pat Neff Hall, Burleson Quadrangle and other historic campus sites from back in the day and today. The growth around Founders Mall and the SUB are particularly striking.

The “Heritage” section also does a great job of laying out Baylor’s history as the oldest continually operating university in Texas. An interactive timeline details about 200 events of Baylor’s past, from its founding in 1845 to the launch of Pro Futuris in 2012, but also such details like the first Dr Pepper Hour, the founding of the NoZe Brotherhood and visits from dignitaries of all sorts.

And there’s plenty more to see:

  • A list of some of Baylor’s prominent alumni, from Medal of Honor Recipients to athletes;
  • A photo gallery showing off Baylor’s beautiful campus;
  • Quick breakdowns of Baylor’s demographics;
  • Where BU stands in various rankings;
  • A handy social media directory; and
  • Background on Baylor’s values and vision.

Go check it out!

Happy birthday to us! Baylor Proud turns 5

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun

First Baylor Proud emailIf Baylor Proud were a person, we’d be entering kindergarten soon; the blog turns five this week!

It’s interesting to go back and look at some of our earliest posts from August 2007 — five years ago — as we were just beginning to get our legs underneath us. Early entries covered topics like Move-In Day, the newly arrived Class of 2011, Karl Rove joining BU students for breakfast and this “cute cute cute” 2-year-old singing “That Good Old Baylor Line.” (That’s our first email pictured at right.)

We’ve come a long way in five years, and we’ve covered a ton of topics. With more than 1,200 posts in five years, we’ve pretty much got something new coming your way on the blog four to five times a week, from academics and student life to athletics and alumni accomplishments.

Communications have come a long way in five years, as well. When Baylor Proud began, it and Baylor Magazine were pretty much the only two ways alumni were hearing from the university. Today, you’ve got several Facebook pages across the university and dozens of Twitter accounts adding to the mix, all designed to keep you informed about what’s going on at Baylor. [Baylor Magazine took a look at how alumni are staying connected to Baylor, and vice versa, in the latest issue; check that out here.]

The introductory mass comm course many of us took taught us that communications is a two-way street, and so everything you hear from Baylor is an invitation for response. Baylor Magazine editors check their mailboxes every day for letters to the editor. Facebook fans comment on virtually every Baylor post, and it couldn’t be easier to respond to tweets. Here at Baylor Proud, of course, we love to get email responses and Point of Pride submissions through the blog.

So whether you prefer Tweets showing up on your phone or just a nice, old-fashioned printed piece delivered by U.S. mail, we hope you’re enjoying hearing from us — and that you’re letting us hear from you, too.

Incoming freshman re-creates Baylor campus in impressive detail — in a video game

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun, Student life, Videos

If you haven’t visited Baylor’s campus lately, incoming freshman Matt Tinsley has you covered. The incoming freshman from Denver painstakingly built the Baylor campus in impressively detailed fashion in the video game Minecraft; take a look:

From the Baylor Sciences Building to Armstrong Browning, Matt nailed the beauty of Baylor’s campus. Next up — Baylor Stadium? Just a thought, Matt…

For a less stylized, more realistic tour of campus, check out Baylor’s Virtual Tour, with flyovers of campus mixed with photos of life here, all narrated by Baylor students. Click below to take the (virtual) tour.

Baylor Virtual Tour

Of course, the best way to see the Baylor campus is to really see it — for yourself, in person. Whether you’re a prospective student or an alum many years past graduation, we’d love to see you around campus. Maybe you can squeeze in a day trip before school starts back this fall, or maybe you can mark down Homecoming 2012 (Nov. 2-4) on your calendar. Regardless of when you can visit — hope to see you soon!

Sic ’em, Matt and all our campus visitors — virtual and otherwise!

Alum stars in new ‘Antiques Roadshow’-type series for PBS

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Videos

Miller GaffneyAs a cast member of new PBS show Market Warriors, Baylor alum Miller Gaffney, BA ’02, is putting her extensive antiques knowledge to use as she competes against three other connoisseurs to find the best deal. (Picture Antiques Roadshow turned into a competition, and you’re pretty close.)

The show – not coincidentally, from the producers of Antiques Roadshow – premiered July 16; it follows a nationwide treasure hunt in which four cast members scour flea markets and antiques shows. While the first half of each episode features the thrill of the hunt, the second is where the competition really begins as the finds of each expert are auctioned off. The one who generates the highest profit is dubbed the winner. [Watch a recent episode online.]

“This is a chance to take off our suspenders and get out there with some real practical experience of buying and selling,” Gaffney recently told The Greenville News about the new show.

After graduating from Baylor, Gaffney spent time in New York, Florida and Columbia and was involved in politics. Drawn to the art world, she attended a master’s program at Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York after working in the art industry in various capacities. She founded Miller Gaffney Art Advisory in 2006 and spends a great deal of time lecturing and speaking on all aspects of art.

Shared love of Browning poetry connects four generations of one Baylor family

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Alumni, Just for Fun

Browning Jane SauthoffIn the spring of 1946, Jo Alice McDonald Cranford, BA ’46, registered for a course at Baylor on the poetry of Robert Browning, taught by the renowned Dr. A.J. Armstrong. She purchased her textbook, The Complete Poetic and Dramatic Works of Robert Browning, published in 1895, for $26 at the university bookstore, gluing notes on onion skin paper throughout the book.

Twenty-seven years later, Cranford’s daughter, Jan Alice Cranford Herrstrom, BA ’73, added more notes to the textbook while studying Browning’s poetry at Baylor under Dr. Jack Herring in the spring of 1973. A third generation used the same textbook in 2002 when Herrstrom’s daughter, Sue Alice Herrstrom Sauthoff, BA ’02, studied Browning’s work in a class with Dr. Mairi Rennie in the basement of the Armstrong-Browning Library (named for her grandmother’s professor and the poets he loved).

The Baylor legacy of this family dates back to 1913, including some 25 relatives who have attended Baylor. Now yet another generation will carry on the family’s love of Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s work, which has captivated this line of women for more than half a century. Browning Jane Sauthoff (pictured, with the shared textbook) was born on February 29, 2012, to Sauthoff and her husband, Matt, BA ’02. Her name is a tribute not only to the poets but also to the generations of women in her family who have loved and studied the Brownings’ poetry before her.

Sic ’em, Sauthoff/Herrstrom/Cranford/McDonald family!

[We learned of this story from a Bear who shared her Baylor pride. Do you know of an inspiring story, news item, or just a fun link that makes you proud of Baylor and the Baylor family? Let us know! Click here to submit your point of pride!]
