Baylor students join ‘Harlem Shake’ craze

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun, Student life, Videos

The Today Show has done one. Ditto for The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Even my great-aunt’s retirement community has shared their version online. So you knew it was just a matter of time until Baylor students got in on the act — and when they did, they did it with style.

More than 100 Baylor students gathered at the Judge Baylor statue to perform their version of the Harlem Shake, a 30-second dance that has gone viral across the Internet. (For more background, here’s what Wikipedia has to say about the craze.) Here’s what these students came up with:

In the approximately 60 hours since the video was posted, it has already been viewed more than 43,000 times. (And if you enjoyed that, check out Baylor Theatre’s version, straight from their production of the 1950s-era play “Born Yesterday.”)

Pigskin proposal named top love story for 2013 in Armstrong Browning contest

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Videos

At Pigskin Revue last fall, Baylor senior Courtney Carameros was named a Homecoming Princess — but that’s not why she’ll remember that night forever. Later in the evening, her boyfriend, fellow senior Mitchell Frank, proposed to her on stage between acts; take a look:

The couple had started dating three years earlier, as Baylor freshmen, but that kiss you saw at the end of that video? That was their first kiss, either as individuals or as a couple. “Our goal was to only kiss one person for the rest of our lives,” writes Courtney. Their story won first prize in the Armstrong Browning Library’s annual “How Do You Love Thee?” love story contest.

Second place went to Bobby (BBA ’66) and Jeannie (BBA ’69) Hill, who met at Baylor in 1966, were married 11 months later, and last year celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Two of their three kids graduated from Baylor, and a granddaughter is headed to Baylor this fall.

Third place went to Thomas (BS ’09) and Jamie Horton, who took the opposite route; the pair knew each other as friends for almost 10 years before getting married at Armstrong Browning last summer, with longtime Baylor VP for student life (and current East Texas Baptist University president) Dub Oliver, BS ’87, leading the ceremony.

Is this the most Baylor Proud wedding ever?

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Photo Galleries, Student life, Videos

Baylor Proud wedding

If there was ever a Baylor Proud wedding, it must have been this one.

When Brad (BBA ’08) and Stephanie (BS ’08, MS ’10, PhD ’12) Doherty got engaged, they decided the wedding should be back where they met and started dating — on the Baylor campus. The couple shot engagement photos on campus (this is my favorite) and booked Miller Chapel for the big day, but the Baylor theme didn’t stop there:

  • The wedding colors were green and gold.
  • The new couple led a “sic ‘em” immediately after being named husband and wife.
  • The recessional was “That Good Old Baylor Line.”
  • Nine members of the wedding party were also Baylor alums (including three from Stephanie’s Welcome Week group).
  • After the ceremony, everyone in attendance who attended Baylor posed for a group photo at the Judge Baylor statue.
  • The groom’s cake was the university seal, and the reception featured Dr Pepper floats.
  • The fight song played during the reception.
  • Stephanie wore a Baylor garter.
  • As the couple left the reception, guests waved green-and-gold pom-poms.
  • Even the getaway car (a family member’s van) was green and gold.

Perhaps this will give some great ideas to Baylor students Austin Aeschbacher and Christine Cookus. Austin, a senior music education major, proposed to Christine, a junior music education major, during the Baylor Symphony Orchestra’s annual Christmas at Baylor concert last month. [See the video.]

I’ll take ‘Baylor featured on Jeopardy!’ for $200, Alex

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun

Baylor on Jeopardy

Twice in the last few months, “Baylor” has been the correct answer to this game show’s questions.

“What is ‘Jeopardy!‘?”

In October, a clue read, “Robert Griffin III was the first player from this Waco, Texas, university to win the Heisman Trophy.”

Then just before Christmas, Alex Trebek gave the clue above (“The Lady Bears of this Texas school went 40-0 en route to winning the 2012 women’s championship”).

This isn’t the first time Baylor’s been the answer/question on Jeopardy!; one of our very first posts on this blog, in fact, relayed another such instance (“The 735-acre campus of this Baptist school is on the banks of the Brazos River in Waco, Texas”).

“Silent night,” indeed. Campus is quiet now, with faculty, staff and students gone for Christmas and Baylor football off to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl.

We’re taking a break as well (except for covering the bowl, of course). While we’re away, enjoy this round-up of Christmas at Baylor, 2012):

Christmas carols from BU trumpet students, Lubbock-area grads

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun, Student life, Videos

Last year, Baylor School of Music professors Mark Schubert and Wiff Rudd challenged their trumpet students to approach a song like a handbell choir — to play the song, “Do-Re-Mi” from The Sound of Music, using a different trumpet for each note. Though challenged, the class eventually accomplished the feat, everyone had fun, and that was that.

Except it wasn’t. Senior music major Taylor Williamson came back a week later with an arrangement for the Baylor Trumpet Studio to perform “Carol of the Bells” in just such a manner. Here’s what they came up:

Meanwhile, the Baylor Women’s Council of Lubbock created their own Baylor Christmas carol for the second year in a row. Some 60-odd Bears, ranging from Class of 1948 to Class of 2012, recorded this video earlier this month at their annual Christmas gathering:

Christmas gift ideas for your Baylor Bear

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni, Just for Fun

Baylor Christmas giftsSearching for the right Christmas gift for that Baylor Bear in your life? Here are some suggestions:

* How about a book? The Year of the Bear and Invincible (about the 2012 Lady Bears) are both beautiful products showcasing Baylor’s athletic success over the past year. Soldiers of the Wooden Cross explores the lives of BU veterans honored on memorial lampposts across campus, and Baylor University Press offers several other books related to Baylor history.

* Clothes? The Sailor Bear collection from the Baylor Bookstore is great for the retro look. These Baylor cowboy boots have been a hot seller this year, and a BU polo is nice for those casual Fridays at work.

* Something for your little future Bear? 1,2,3 Baylor is great for the littlest ones, and B is for Baylor targets a slightly older child in teaching the alphabet. This Bruiser Pillow Pet is a favorite of my son’s.

* For the RG3 fan? There’s no shortage of options. This Baylor t-shirt is pretty sweet, or you can go with a Redskins jersey or jersey t-shirt. He’s got “unbelievably believable” socks and a “no pressure, no diamonds” shirt. But my favorite? This bobblehead.

* Something from the Baylor family? Consider World Magazine’s Book of the Year (by Baylor prof Rodney Stark), the Hatfields & McCoys DVD set (from alum Kevin Reynolds), or the final CD from the David Crowder Band. Also, new Christmas music from Laura Cooksey, BM ’01, Brett and Emily Mills, BA ’98/BA ’99, Jeff McMahon, BA ’87, The Digital Age (former members of DCB) and the Robbie Seay Band.

And if none of this strikes your fancy? For a particularly meaningful gift, consider a donation to the President’s Scholarship Initiative in honor of your loved one. Or for even more Baylor gear and accessories, check out the Baylor Bookstore website or shop local t-shirt producers like Congress Clothing, Screen-Tex Graphics and Bearland Outfitters.

Christmas at Baylor in photos, 2012

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Faith, Just for Fun, Photo Galleries, Student life

Christmas on 5th Street 2012

Unseasonably warm temperatures the last few days (including a record-for-the-date 83 degrees on Saturday!) make it feel not so much like Christmas outside. But yet the calendar turns; it’s December, and classes for the fall semester wrapped up yesterday, believe it or not.

But while the weather may make us think more beach than Bethlehem, the decorations around campus definitely say “Christmastime.” From the lights adorning Burleson Quadrangle to the traditional KOT Christmas tree — not to mention the live nativity in front of the SUB for Christmas on 5th Street — it’s beginning to at least look a lot like Christmas.

In case you missed it late last week, the official Baylor Facebook page shared this photo gallery from Christmas on 5th Street and Santa’s Workshop — full of camels and choirs, presents and photo ops, nutcrackers and even St. Nick. (I particularly like the Facebook page’s new cover photo.)
