• Baylor ‘dorm mom’ celebrates 90th birthday with former Collins residents

Baylor Collins dorm mom Doris Gage

Doris Gage, BM ’47, had never lived in a Baylor dorm. Because of it, she always felt like she had missed out on the full Baylor experience. She never had the frustration of learning to live with a roommate, or the joy of suddenly realizing she’s become your best friend. But in 1979 — more than 30 years after graduation — Mrs. Gage got that dorm experience. She became the Collins “dorm mom.”

Formally, Mrs. Gage was the director of Collins Residential Hall — but she treated the girls who lived there as her own, and she still considers the 16 years she spent mentoring and caring for those thousands of young Baylor women as some of her favorites. So naturally, she wanted to celebrate her 90th birthday the best way she knew how: with her Collins residents.

At the green-and-gold-themed party (because of course it was a green-and-gold-themed party) guests even sang “That Good Old Baylor Line” — during which Mrs. Gage became a bit emotional. “It was always fun,” said one attendee of her time at Collins. “She’d always spin the positive. She always laughed.”

Sic ’em (and happy birthday), Mrs. Gage!
