• Baylor School of Social Work names new dean

    Dr. Jon Singletary

It’s official: Dr. Jon Singletary, BA ’93, is the new dean of the Diana R. Garland School of Social Work.

And it won’t take Singletary long to get up to speed; neither the position nor the school is entirely new to Singletary. He’s been interim dean since June 2015, when he succeeded the late Dr. Diana Garland. And in fact, he’s been around Baylor off and on since the late 1980s. After graduating from Baylor with his BA in speech communications from Baylor in 1993, Singletary spent the next decade elsewhere working up to his doctorate.

Over the years, he’s been a pastor, a professor (having returned to Baylor in 2003), a director, a researcher — and now, a dean. He says he absolutely considers it “an honor to continue the legacy of our founding dean, namesake, and my mentor.”

Others say the honor is Baylor’s. “A gifted teacher, insightful researcher, and skilled administrator, he will lead the School of Social Work in ways that will both honor and extend the noble and notable legacy of Dr. Diana R. Garland,” says Dr. Todd Still, the school’s interim provost. “Dean Singletary’s energy, creativity and ability will redound to the school’s and the university’s great good.”

    Sic ’em, Dr. Singletary!
