Lady Bears win 6th straight Big 12 title
Monday night’s win over No. 8 Texas extended several streaks for the No. 4-ranked Lady Bears. Head coach Kim Mulkey’s squad has now won 13 straight games vs. Texas, 17 consecutive games since their only defeat of the season, and — most importantly — a sixth-straight Big 12 Conference regular season title. Let’s put that in perspective:
- Only three Big 12 teams — in any sport — have ever won more consecutive regular season championships (and two of those three are from Baylor): Kansas men’s basketball (12 straight), Baylor men’s tennis (8), and Baylor women’s tennis (7).
- This will be the third straight Lady Bear senior class to leave Baylor having known nothing but conference championships.
- Baylor’s current freshmen — including Beatrice Mompremier, who started and tallied 9 points and 10 rebounds tonight — were 12- and 13-year-olds in 7th grade the last time the Lady Bears didn’t win the Big 12.
After winning their regular season finale in front of a sold-out Ferrell Center crowd, Baylor will have a first-round bye in this weekend’s Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship. Saturday in Oklahoma City, they’ll face the winner of Iowa State/Texas Tech in the tournament quarterfinals (1:30 p.m., FSN).
Sic ’em, Lady Bears!
