• Rudy Giuliani joins President Starr on campus for ‘On Topic’ conversation

Rudy Giuliani with Baylor President Ken Starr

Rudy Giuliani made his name as mayor of New York City from 1994-2001, during which time he helped clean up the city and, of course, led New York in its initial response to the September 11th terrorist attacks.

But during a wide-ranging “On Topic” conversation with Baylor President Ken Starr Wednesday night, Giuliani entertained a packed Waco Hall audience Wednesday night with stories reaching far beyond 9/11. The native New Yorker touched on lessons of leadership, why he decided to run for mayor of New York, even his love for the Yankees and their recently deceased former star, Yogi Berra. In closing, Giuliani shared a few words of advice for Baylor students. “Figure out what you want to do, and try to make it something you enjoy,” he said. “Don’t expect immediate success; take failure as a valuable thing. … Pursue your dream, and if you get knocked down a few times, just learn from it. Successful people are people who can absorb failure and use it as a learning experience.”

(For more details of Giuliani’s visit, check out these recaps from the Waco Tribune-Herald and the Baylor Lariat. The Lariat also filed this video report, including excerpts from a one-on-one interview with Giuliani.)

Giuliani is Baylor’s 12th on-campus “On Topic” guest, adding to a list of visitors that includes former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, longtime U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell and former U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman.

    Sic ’em, Rudy Giuliani!
