• World-renowned philosopher joins Baylor faculty

    John Haldane

We snagged a good one, Baylor Nation.

Baylor has announced the appointment of world-famous philosopher John Haldane as a distinguished professor in philosophy beginning this fall. While Haldane may not be a household name to many Bears, it certainly is in the world of philosophy. He’ll be leaving his homeland of Scotland, where since 1983 he has taught at the University of St Andrews – Scotland’s oldest university, founded in 1413, and the third-oldest in the English-speaking world.

Haldane is famous for his prolific writing in multiple areas of philosophy. His works include Atheism and Theism, An Intelligent Person’s Guide to ReligionFaithful Reason and Reasonable Faith. And that list doesn’t even touch his writings for general readers on faith and philosophy, newspaper and periodical writings for such outlets as The (London) Times, and his frequent BBC radio and TV appearances.

Haldane clearly stood out to Baylor, and thankfully, Baylor also stood out to Haldane. He has praised his new university for “retaining an unapologetic, yet un-strident affirmation of Christian faith and values while also committing itself to high academic standards both in teaching and in scholarship and research. That combination is rare, and Baylor shows a real commitment to pursuing those two goals.”

Haldane says he, his wife and his children “very much look forward to becoming members of the Baylor family.”

    Sic ’em, Dr. Haldane!
