Baylor golf teams roll into postseason among nation’s best
You know about the rise of Baylor football, and the extended success of Baylor basketball. You probably know about Baylor’s tennis dynasty, too. But do you realize just how good Baylor is at golf, too?
Of course, it starts at the varsity level, where head coach Jay Goble’s women’s golf team won the Big 12 Championship last month. The Lady Bears are ranked 19th nationally and enter this weekend’s NCAA Regional — the program’s 14th in 16 years — as a No. 6 seed, meaning Baylor is favored to advance to the NCAA Championships later this month.
The Baylor men aren’t far behind. Under first-year head coach Mike McGraw, the Bears are ranked 18th in the nation and are headed to their 18th straight NCAA tournament appearance later this month. On the course, Baylor is led by senior Kyle Jones, one of 10 national player of the year semifinalists and one of 10 collegians picked to represent the United States at this year’s Palmer Cup.
But the talent goes even deeper than that. The Baylor Club Golf team came within three strokes of a second straight national title, finishing as runners-up at the NCCGA Spring 2015 National Championship — the program’s fourth straight top-3 finish. Sophomore Sam Hall tied for second on the individual leaderboard, shooting an even par over the two-day event.
Sic ’em, Baylor golf!
