• Truett prof succeeds Garland as seminary dean

    Dr. Todd Still

Dr. Todd Still, BA ’88, took office today as the fifth dean of Baylor’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary.

A member of Phi Beta Kappa while at Baylor, Still graduated in 1988 with a degree in Greek and sociology. After earning his M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a doctorate from the University of Glasgow, Still taught at Dallas Baptist and at Gardner-Webb’s School of Divinity before coming to Truett in 2003.

At Baylor, Still has taught New Testament and Greek. He is the author of one technical monograph and three commentaries, has co-authored a textbook, edited five volumes, and is under contract to write three more New Testament studies. A licensed and ordained Baptist minister, Still currently serves as interim preacher at First Baptist Church Midland. He has also served three terms as Faculty Regent on Baylor’s Board and was chair of Baylor’s Faculty Senate in 2012-13.

His Baylor blood runs deep; in addition to being both a graduate and professor here, Still is married to a Baylor Bear, Carolyn (BSED ’90), and is the father of another (Samuel, a freshman). The Stills also have another son, Andrew, a high school sophomore.

Dr. Still takes the reins at Truett from Dr. David Garland, who plans to return to full-time teaching after eight years as Truett’s dean.

    Sic ’em, Dr. Still!

[Interesting side note: Three of Truett’s previous four deans have gone on to serve as either interim or full-time university presidents: Dr. Robert B. Sloan Jr., BA ’70, first at Baylor and now at Houston Baptist University; Dr. J. Bradley Creed, BA ’79, named president of Campbell University in January; and Garland, who served as Baylor’s interim president from 2008-10. The fourth dean, Paul Powell, was president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas from 1985-87.]

[Update: An earlier version of this post, based on the initial press release, stated that Still would take office on June 1. Since the press release was issued, however, his start date was moved up — to today! The post has been edited to reflect that.]
