• Joe Lieberman joins President Starr on campus for ‘On Topic’ conversation

    Joe Lieberman

Joe Lieberman has been a lot of things: a state attorney general, a U.S. Senator, even the Democratic candidate for vice president. Tuesday night, he was President Ken Starr’s latest guest in Baylor’s “On Topic” series, meeting with Judge Starr for a public conversation in Waco Hall. (See photos from the event here.)

“I’ve never been to Waco before; I don’t know how I’ve claimed to be a civilized person,” Lieberman told the audience. “But it’s a beautiful town; Baylor’s a very impressive university. … As a visitor, Baylor is darn lucky to have Ken Starr as its president.”

Before the event, Lieberman took time to meet with Baylor student leaders. Once on stage, the pair of former public officials discussed everything from the 2000 Presidential election to recent cases of police brutality, from same-sex marriage to foreign policy.

In closing, he shared some advice for Baylor students: “Don’t let your college years go by without appreciating that they will probably be the best four years of your life. Be grateful that you’re at a wonderful university; you really are. Be excited about the world that you’re growing up in. With all the problems, the opportunities that you will have make you blessed. You’re honestly in the best country in the world.”

Lieberman is the 11th on-campus “On Topic” guest, adding to a list of visitors that includes former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, longtime U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor and former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell.

    Sic em, Sen. Lieberman!
