• Baylor senior travels to Peru for International UN Climate Conference

    Barry Hartweg

After Thanksgiving break, most Baylor students returned to campus to complete their final days of classes in advance of finals. Senior Barry Hartweg, however, spent the first week of December in Peru as a student ambassador to a UN climate conference.

Hartweg arrived in Lima Nov. 29 as one of eight college students from across the U.S. chosen to represent the American Chemical Society (ACS). As more than 190 nations create an official international climate change agreement, the student ambassadors are attending talks, taking part in UN events, discussing special interests with other non-governmental organizations, and interviewing world leaders. They also have used Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and a blog to reach educators, activists, and college students around the world.

Hartweg, a chemistry major from North Texas, interned this past summer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., through the Department of Energy’s Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship program. There, he researched ways to make solar energy more efficient; after graduation, he plans to pursue a career in such research.

    Sic ’em, Barry!
