• School of Ed dean wins Texas lifetime achievement award

    Dr. Jon Englehardt

The dean of Baylor’s School of Education, Dr. Jon Engelhardt, will retire in May after 36 years in higher education (including the last eight at Baylor). But before he goes, he’s got at least one more honor coming his way.

Engelhardt is the newest recipient of the rarely-given Robert B. Howsam Award, a lifetime achievement award from the Texas Association for Colleges of Teacher Education that recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to education at the state and national levels.

Receiving the award “was a real surprise,” Engelhardt says. “Many of us labor in the garden of education — just doing our work, neither seeking or expecting recognition; so when someone does take notice, it is indeed a very special and personally meaningful moment.”

But it really shouldn’t come as a surprise. Since Engelhardt came to Baylor in 2007, the School of Education has grown signifcantly — in terms of enrollment, endowment, and programs (such as a new Ph.D. program in higher education). Under his leadership, the School of Education has also reached out into the community through partnerships with Midway ISD and Baylor Scott & White Health. And on the national level, Engelhardt has served on boards for teacher preparation (AACTE and CPED) as well as Educational School accreditation (NCATE, now CAEP) and has chaired on ACSR for state associations of Education Schools.

    Sic ’em, Dean Engelhardt!
