Baylor football’s fundraiser hits home for one Bear

As a young child, he was told he’d never be able to climb stairs normally, and his stutter was so bad he couldn’t even answer the phone. So naturally, Erik Milam played on a championship football team in high school, ran a 5k this year, and regularly gives public speeches.

Milam, BBA ’03, was born with cerebral palsy. But he hasn’t let the disorder stop him — not from athletics and public speaking, and not from attending Baylor (where he was active in Student Foundation, Kappa Sigma, the Welcome Week Steering Committee and more). Since graduation, he has become a financial planner at TrustCore Financial and board president of the Middle Tennessee chapter of United Cerebral Palsy, and earlier this year, he was named to InvestmentNews‘ list of “40 under 40” — the nation’s top financial planning advisors and professionals under age 40.

As it just so happens, Baylor football used its Homecoming victory over Kansas to raise money for cerebral palsy research — a cause naturally near and dear to Milam’s heart. Baylor fans pledged money for every touchdown the Bears scored, raising more than $6,000 for the cause and leading Milam to post this “thank you” note to YouTube:
