Ending world hunger is a daunting and overwhelming task, to say the least. But like they say, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

With that in mind, the Texas Hunger Initiative (THI), housed in Baylor’s School of Social Work, does whatever it can to end hunger in Texas and beyond.

Right now, THI is hosting its sixth annual “Together at the Table Hunger and Poverty Summit.” More than 350 leaders from across the country have gathered at Baylor to exchange ideas on reducing hunger and poverty — ideas they will then take home and put into practice.

Baylor President and Chancellor Ken Starr is among the guests at the summit’s large-group meetings; he will conclude the summit Friday hosting a discussion with U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro on how public policy can help the cause. Castro himself has experienced how poverty can limit a person; as a second-generation Mexican American from San Antonio, his goal is to ensure future generations have the same chance he and his family did at achieving their American dream.

Ideas shared at past Hunger Summits are already making a difference. For example, since the first summit was held at Baylor in 2009, THI and its partners across the state have seen 60 million more school breakfasts served to children each year, and the number of Texas children receiving summer meals has increased to more than 63,000 per day.

    Sic ’em, Texas Hunger Initiative!
