• A sneak peek at Baylor’s Class of 2018

    freshmen-july17

Orientation for this fall’s freshmen is complete, and Line Camp is nearly done as well. So what are Baylor’s newest students like? Here’s a sneak peek at just a few of the faces who make up Baylor’s Class of 2018:

    * Friends tell identical twins Abbey and Caroline Haines apart by their hair; Abbey, the older of the two, wears hers shoulder length, while Caroline sports a shorter crop. Little else distinguishes them, at least on paper. The pair claimed salutatorian and valedictorian honors, respectively, at China Spring High School, just outside Waco; both play in the band, both enjoy science fiction, and both will study physics at Baylor.

    * When Michael Nagle was just 3 years old, his father, a corrections officer, was killed by an inmate. Fellow corrections officers in the Nagles’ hometown of Beeville, Texas, pledged to pay for college for Michael and his sister. This fall, they will begin following through on that promise, as Michael enrolls at Baylor with the dream of becoming a math professor.

    * Riley Neal was one of just about 30 seniors at Savoy High School, north of Dallas, but he is one of about 8,000 National Merit Finalists nationwide to receive a merit scholarship. Neal played football, basketball, baseball and track for the Cardinals, and was also the school’s valedictorian.

    * Alaina Walberg was named the top policy debate speaker in the country at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in June. This fall, she’ll be joining the storied Glenn R. Capp Debate Forum at Baylor. The Kansas City-area native came in number one out of approximately 400 of the nation’s top debaters.

    Sic em, Class of 2018!
