Despite unseasonably chilly weather, thousands of Baylor students spent their Saturday “Steppin’ Out” — volunteering across Waco as a way to say “thanks” to our university’s hometown.

Approximately 3,000 Baylor students — about a quarter of the university’s undergraduates — were sent out all over the city to paint houses, clean up yards, and perform other much-needed work in partnership with local churches and other agencies.

What began in 1985 as an annual event is now held each semester. At its heart, the day is about giving back to the local community, but over the years it has also helped get students more involved in activities across Waco, bursting the pattern of the familiar “Baylor bubble” that sometimes forms around campus.

“We’ve had an incredibly positive response,” says senior biochemistry major Tyler Couch, student director of the Steppin’ Out steering committee. “I think people really enjoy getting to interact with Baylor students and getting to work with them on different projects to make Waco a more positive city to live in.”

    Sic ’em, Baylor volunteers!
