President Starr speaking out for religious freedom

Next month, President Ken Starr will deliver the opening address at a conference on religious freedom in Rome, co-sponsored by Baylor’s Institute for Studies of Religion and organized by Georgetown University’s Religious Freedom Project.

The two-day conference, “Christianity and Freedom: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives,” will highlight the contributions of Christianity to the understanding and practice of freedom for all people. The topic has been at the forefront of Judge Starr’s mind lately:

• The President spoke on the subject at a conference in Washington, D.C., earlier this fall, in a keynote conversation on the First Amendment and the future of religious liberty in America. (Watch that panel discussion here.)
• He followed that up with an op-ed in the Dallas Morning News last month titled “The triple tragedy of Christian persecution in Middle East;” you can read that online here.
• Just last week, Judge Starr again referenced the subject in his quarterly letter to the Baylor family, in which he noted that the subject of religious freedom “is a topic of profound importance to our hurting world and to all who lift up the ideal of religious liberty.”

Among the highlights of the December conference in Rome will be the presentation of results from a two-year study conducted by dozens of scholars concerning Christianity’s contributions to freedom.
