Capitol Hill veteran and Baylor alum named among ’50 Politicos To Watch’

On Capitol Hill, people know Russ Sullivan, BA ’83. The former Baylor student body president was the longtime staff director and top aide to Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) and is now both a lobbyist and a foster parent. And last month, he was honored as one of Politico’s “50 Politicos To Watch” in his new role with McGuire Woods Consulting.

It should come as no surprise to those who knew him at Baylor that Sullivan has made an impact, or that his career includes lobbying. As student body president in the early 1980s, he worked with President Herbert Reynolds to create “Baylor Ambassadors,” a student organization that continues to assist Baylor in lobbying local, state and federal officials, as well as hosting public officials who visit Baylor.

Sullivan’s service is on display away from government as well. A dedicated foster parent, Sullivan is the legal guardian for 18 boys, almost all of whom are now either in college or have already graduated. His move away from the Senate was motivated by the need to pay for many of their college educations.

From Pat Neff Hall to Capitol Hill, Sullivan has influenced countless lives and earned the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle.
