Incoming freshman named Grand National Fiddle Champion
Country music legend Alabama taught us that “if you’re gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band.” If that’s really the case, then Baylor is set.
Last month, incoming freshman Mia Orosco was named the 2012 Grand National Champion at the National Old Time Fiddlers’ Contest in Weiser, Idaho. A native of nearby Lorena, Texas, just about 10 miles down I-35 from the BU campus, Orosco beat out a host of fellow fiddlers ranging in age from 17 to 57. Orosco began her musical career at age 6 and started fiddling at 13. In 2009, she performed on NPR’s “From the Top” when the show was taped on the Baylor campus in Jones Concert Hall; Orosco was the only Central Texas musician invited to perform at that show.
This fall, she’ll begin life at Baylor as a (what else) music major, focusing on violin performance.
Sic ’em, Mia!
