• Regents thank Baylor friends in the state legislature

    Legislators with trophies

When Baylor faces important challenges — as it has in recent years on issues such as conference realignment and the Texas Equalization Grant (TEG) — it’s a blessing to know that we have advocates in the state legislature who are fighting on our behalf.

As part of the February meeting of Baylor’s Board of Regents, many of those legislators were invited to a Thursday dinner celebrating our athletic successes so far this year. Four student-athletes (men’s basketball’s Quincy Acy, women’s basketball’s Lindsey Palmer, softball’s Kayce Walker and track and field’s Woodrow Randall) spoke to the gathered crowd that also included many of Baylor’s coaches.

Special legislative guests included State Senators Brian Birdwell and Kirk Watson, BA ’80, JD ’81, as well as State Representatives Charles “Doc” Anderson; Kelly Hancock, BBA ’86; Linda Harper-Brown; Diane Patrick, BA ’66; Larry Phillips, BBA ’88; and Jim Pitts. Former Gov. Mark White, BBA ’62, JD ’65, and Waco Mayor Jim Bush were also in attendance. (Click here for a photo gallery of some of the notable guests.)

Sic ’em, Baylor athletics and Baylor reps in the state legislature!
