Griffin in thick of Heisman race entering season’s final week
Despite missing the second half of last week’s win over Texas Tech with a concussion, Robert Griffin III is still very much in the race for the Heisman. Here’s a quick survey of what college football experts around the nation are saying:
- Sporting News and CBS Sports still have RG3 at No. 1 on each of their Heisman watches, and Yahoo! Sports has Griffin as national player of the year. [Update: Rivals.com also has RG3 at No. 1.]
- Sports Illustrated has Griffin at No. 2, behind only Alabama RB Trent Richardson.
- ESPN’s Heisman Watch has Griffin at No. 3, behind Richardson and Stanford QB Andrew Luck, as does HeismanPundit.com’s straw poll of voters (though RG3 is tied with Luck for the most first-place votes there).
Griffin has already won a host of national honors this year, but you can play a part in helping him win two more. Both the Heisman and the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award incorporate fan voting into their final results; click here to vote for the Heisman, and click here to vote for the O’Brien Award. (You can vote for each once per day.)
Given Griffin’s success this year, there’s a very real chance he could enter the NFL draft next spring. That would make this Saturday his final game at Floyd Casey Stadium, as it will be for Baylor’s senior class that includes WR Kendall Wright, RB Terrance Ganaway, C Philip Blake, LB Elliot Coffey, OL Robert T. Griffin, NT Nicolas Jean-Baptiste, PK Ben Parks, DT Tracy Robertson and others.
With such players to send off, plus a ranked Baylor team gunning for its ninth win of the year against a longtime rival, there’s no reason Floyd Casey shouldn’t be sold out Saturday vs. No. 22 Texas (2:30 p.m., ABC/ESPN). Sic ’em, Bears!
