• A look back at the senior year experience of Baylor’s Reunion Honor Classes

    Diadeloso

It’s Homecoming Week! Friday night, Reunion Honor Classes (those who graduated in 1966, ’71, ’76, ’81, ’86, ’91, ’96, ’01 and ’06) are invited to a buffet reception on the fifth floor of the Cashion Academic Center, adjacent to the Hankamer School of Business and with a scenic view of campus. (Get your reception ticket now.)

It’s interesting to look back on what members of each of those classes experienced during their senior years at Baylor. For instance:

    • The Class of 1966 was around for the groundbreaking for the Sid Richardson Science Building, enjoyed the first Christmas tree lighting, and celebrated the traditional campus spring holiday under its new name, “Diadeloso.”
    • The Class of 1971 attended on-campus concerts by The Supremes, The Fifth Dimension, The Association and the Carpenters. Student Foundation also organized the first Bear Downs that spring.
    • The Class of 1976 saw Abner McCall become the first Baylor president to move into the new Allbritton House and welcomed President Gerald Ford to campus as he spoke in Waco Hall.
    • The Class of 1981 watched first-year students attend the first Freshman Follies, cheered on the football team to perhaps the best season in program history, and heard news that Herbert Reynolds had been elected as the university’s 11th president.
    • The Class of 1986 celebrated the Texas sesquicentennial and saw a pair of Baylor alums, Texas Governor Mark White and Attorney General Jim Mattox, ride in the Homecoming parade.
    • The Class of 1991 watched the Baylor Golden Wave Marching Band lead the inauguration parade for new Texas Governor Ann Richards, another BU grad, and were around as ground was broken on the Glennis McCrary Music Building and the Jesse H. Jones Library.
    • The Class of 1996 saw the Bears compete in the final year of the Southwest Conference and attended the first-ever dance on campus, the “Miracle on Fifth Street.”
    • The Class of 2001 saw groundbreaking for the long-awaited panhellenic building (the Stacy Riddle Forum), Bear Ridge Golf Course (now Twin Rivers) and the Mayborn Museum Complex and welcomed the launch of AirBear, the campus’ first wireless Internet service.
    • The Class of 2006 celebrated Homecoming with the dedication of the Williams Bear Habitat, made a relief trip to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and attended groundbreaking for Brooks Village.

Ahh, memories… Look forward to seeing members of these classes at the receptions Friday night!

    Sic ’em, Reunion Honor Classes!
