• Texas poet laureate and state artist for 2012 share Baylor ties

Karl UmlaufDid you know that the state of Texas annually appoints a poet laureate, state musician, state two-dimensional artist and state three-dimensional artist? Interestingly, two of the Texas Legislature’s four honorees for 2012 have Baylor ties.

The 2012 poet laureate, Jan Seale, attended Baylor in the late 1950s, as did her husband, Carl, BM ’58. A lifelong Texan, she is the author of six volumes of poetry and several books of short fiction and essays.

The state two-dimensional artist for 2012, Karl Umlauf (pictured), has been artist-in-residence at Baylor since 1989 and was named the university’s Centennial Professor in 2003. His works can be seen in more than 100 public and museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Sic ’em, Baylor poets and artists!
