BBC News segment features Baylor women’s tennis’ international flavor
Over the past decade or so, the Baylor tennis teams have stood out for their consistent excellence. Both Matt Knoll’s men and Joey Scrivano’s women have reached at least the NCAA Sweet 16 each of the past six years. The men have made 13 straight NCAA tournament appearances and received a top-10 national seeding every year since 2001, while the women have won the Big 12 Championship six straight years (and seven out of the last eight).
Another thing the tennis teams share is their affinity for bringing student-athletes from all over the world to Waco, Texas, for a Baylor education and to represent the university in the world of collegiate athletics. The BBC ran a feature on Scrivano’s Lady Bears last week (click to view) highlighting their success and the team’s international flavor.
Back in 2007, Baylor Magazine examined the benefits (both to Baylor and the student-athlete) that come with recruiting internationally. In short, the university gains some outstanding representatives who often carry the Baylor name back overseas after graduation, while the individual student gets an education they very well may not have been able to receive without athletics.
Sic ’em, international Bears!
