• Student photographer’s pic featured in Sports Illustrated

SI with Daniel Cernero's photoWe shared via @BaylorProud on Twitter last month when the Baylor name made the cover of Sports Illustrated not once, but twice, as the men’s basketball team made SI’s top 20 and the women actually topped SI’s top 10; both lists were detailed on the cover of the magazine’s college basketball preview issue.

Inside, a photo of freshman Perry Jones III accompanied the story on the Baylor men. But rather than use a photo taken by one of SI’s many award-winning photographers, the magazine went with an image taken by a Lariat student photographer; the photo credit is even listed as “Daniel Cernero/Baylor Lariat.” (That’s his pic at right; click to enlarge.) Cernero, the Lariat’s chief photographer, will graduate next week with his degree in journalism. What a nice resume line item as he looks for his first job after graduation!

While we’re talking basketball… Both the Baylor men and women are off to hot starts. The No. 2-ranked Lady Bears are 9-1, with their only defeat a one-point loss on the road against No. 1 UConn, while the Bears have a perfect 6-0 and are ranked No. 9 in the coaches poll and No. 10 in the AP top 25 — both program records.

Sic ’em, Daniel and Baylor basketball!
