Football the highlight of outstanding weekend for Baylor athletics
What a weekend! After Baylor football’s dominating win over Kansas in the team’s Big 12 Conference opener, the Bears are receiving votes in both polls, showing up in the AP voting for the second time this season and making their debut in the 2010 coaches’ poll. Robert Griffin III’s career day earned the Baylor quarterback Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time in his career.
At 4-1, Baylor has the second-best record in Texas among all FBS (formerly Division I-A) schools, behind only undefeated and fifth-ranked TCU. With 10 votes in the AP poll, Baylor is ranked 32nd in the nation, just three spots behind Texas as the Bears roll into the Cotton Bowl for this weekend’s Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Shootout against Texas Tech (11 a.m. Saturday). Baylor football wasn’t the only team experiencing success this weekend; BU soccer also picked up a pair of wins, beating Nebraska 2-1 on Friday and then upsetting No. 22 Colorado 1-0 in double overtime on Sunday. Head coach Marci Jobson’s squad is now 9-3-1 on the year (2-2 Big 12) as they head into another big weekend, playing Texas A&M Friday in College Station and hosting Texas Sunday in Austin.
The success even spilled over into Baylor alumni. On the gridiron, Matt Bryant kicked a game-winning field goal in the final seconds for the second time in as many weeks to lift the Atlanta Falcons to victory, while on the diamond, David Murphy and the Texas Rangers celebrated making the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
Sic ’em, Bears!
