• A sneak peek at the Class of 2014

Incoming freshmenWith the summer well underway, Baylor’s class of 2014 is busy with Orientation and Line Camps, not only on campus but in Arkansas, North Carolina and Colorado as well (read more about that here). But just who are this fall’s freshmen? Here are just a few of the faces that will grace campus in just a couple of months.

    * Two years ago, Green Bay, Wisc., native Megan Hermann had to fight through blackouts, severe vertigo and excruciating pain just to make it through the day. Finally diagnosed with a rare disorder and given tools to manage the condition, Hermann has excelled in science — driven in part by her own illness — and plans to become a neurosurgeon after attending Baylor, where she will major in biochemistry and Spanish.

    * Alex Kimbrough graduated first in his class this spring at Belton High School, about an hour down I-35 from Baylor. That’s a difficult enough feat on its own, made all the more impressive when one learns that Kimbrough’s mother has spent much of the past three years battling breast cancer. Kimbrough was frequently left at home while his parents traveled for surgeries and treatment. Perhaps that experience is why he, too, hopes to become a doctor after graduating from Baylor.

    * Elizabeth Garza has done it all at Goliad High School: Student Council executive president, National Honor Society officer and award-winning member of the color guard. And yet, she’s still found time for a number of activities outside of school as well, serving as Relay for Life co-captain and raising funds for the American Cancer Society.

    * Funmibi Fashina, from nearby Harker Heights, is a National Merit Finalist who chose Baylor for its bioinformatics program that combines biology and computer science. She believes her experiences at the Texas Bioscience Institute will help her enter college prepared for the academic rigors Baylor presents.

    Sic ’em, Class of 2014!
