U.S. Representative (and Baylor Bear) fighting for Louisiana residents in wake of oil spill
As BP continues to work to stop the oil leaking in the Gulf of Mexico, U.S. Representative and Baylor graduate Joseph Cao, BS ’90, continues to work on behalf of the residents of Louisiana’s second district, which includes most of New Orleans and its suburbs.
Since the spill began six weeks ago, Cao has been involved from the House floor to the Louisiana shores. In early May, he drafted a bill pushing for Louisiana and other Gulf states to begin sharing offshore oil revenues with the federal government sooner than later as a source of state funding for the clean-up that will be necessary once the oil leak stops. Around the state, he has pushed to provide translators for non-English-speaking Louisiana residents whose businesses have been affected by the spill and organized a “claims fair” to better help oil spill victims file claims, request help or get information about their rights. Cao was also among the delegation that welcomed President Barack Obama when he visited Louisiana this past weekend, as pictured here.
It’s reassuring to know that in times of disaster, there are Baylor Bears out there fighting on behalf of those who need help.
Sic ’em, Representative Cao!
