• Law grad recognized for service to community

A belated “sic ’em” to David Grove, BA ’76, JD ’77, on being earning the Mickey F. Mehaffy Award from the Jefferson County Bar Association this past fall. The honor is given each year to an attorney who has done outstanding work on a pro bono basis.

Sometimes we may seem a bit like a broken record here, touting the various students and alumni who are honored for serving their community. (See here, here, here and here for a few examples.) But one of the things that most sets Baylor apart, and that makes us most proud to be Baylor Bears, is that our university doesn’t just turn out excellent professionals (though there’s plenty of that, too) — it truly prepares graduates for “worldwide leadership and service” (emphasis added).

For Grove, the pro bono work is a chance to serve his friends and neighbors in Beaumont, Texas. “A lot of times the only things people hear about lawyers are the bad things, but there are many things lawyers do to give back to the community,” he says. “With pro bono work, we just have to keep doing it. The more people you can get involved, the better it’s going to be.”

    Sic ’em, David!
