• Marathon weekend for ROTC cadet ends with triathlon success

Mandy KingWhether you’re a Baylor graduate returning to campus or a student preparing for visitors and all the events, Homecoming Weekend is a busy one for lots of Bears. Sophomore Mandy King, however, took things to another level.

A cadet in Baylor’s Air Force ROTC program, King commanded the Honor Guard in Baylor’s Homecoming Parade (that’s her with the American flag at right) and the presentation of the colors at the Bears’ football game later that day. After Homecoming events concluded, she hopped in her car and drove down to Austin, where the next day she competed in an Ironman 70.3 Triathlon. Better than that, she didn’t just compete — she placed second in her age group, completing the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run in 5 hours, 39 minutes.

King is one of about 15 members of the Baylor Triathlon Club, founded last fall to support students interested in the sport. Me — I’ll stick to cheering from the sidelines.

    Sic ’em, Mandy!
