Baylor professor honored as leader in Baptist church music

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Faith, Honors

Dr. Terry YorkThe overlapping worlds of music and the Baptist faith have long been home to Baylor professor Dr. Terry York. After years as a minister of music and later serving as project coordinator for the The Baptist Hymnal, York now teaches in both Baylor’s School of Music and Truett Seminary. In his spare time, he has also written a number of hymns, most notably “Worthy of Worship.”

For all of this, York was recently honored with the W. Hines Sims Award from the Baptist Church Music Conference, the group’s highest honor. The award is named for the editor of the 1956 Baptist Hymnal who also served as secretary of the Church Music Department of the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board (now LifeWay Christian Services) for nearly 20 years. The award for York also came on the heels of the news last month that his lyrics for “See God’s Light” had been selected as the new university hymn for Ouachita Baptist University.

Sic ’em, Dr. York!
