• Biology professor earns 2009 Distinguished Scientist Award

Dr. Owen LindIn 1966, Dr. Owen Lind came to Waco fresh off earning his Ph.D. at Missouri to begin Baylor’s Limnology program (the study of fresh bodies of water — or as Dr. Lind puts it, “the oceanography of lakes”). Earlier this month, Lind was awarded the 2009 Distinguished Scientist Award from the Texas Academy of Science for his 40-plus years of research on algae and water quality.

Lind’s research isn’t limited to Waco; his studies take him (and his students) everywhere from Michigan to Mexico, and a new program goes even further. Partnering with the Center for Tropical Research at the University of Veracruz, Lind is examining a particular tropical toxic algae, which has spread rapidly enough to become a threat to humans and livestock in not only the tropics but also the U.S.

    Sic ’em, Dr. Lind!
