Long-time leader and Burleson descendant passes after life of service

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Alumni

Eleanor TinsleyContinuing on yesterday’s theme of service…  Eleanor Whilden Tinsley — a 1946 Baylor graduate and the great-granddaughter of former Baylor president Rufus C. Burleson — passed away Tuesday at the age of 82.

A longtime Houston City Council member, Tinsley followed in Burleson’s footsteps by living a life of service dedicated to improving the world for others. She championed the preservation of green spaces and worked to improve conditions for schoolchildren in Houston, first as a board member of the Houston Independent School District from 1969-73 and then as a member of the city council from 1979-95. Tinsley Elementary School in Houston was named in her honor in 2001.

Tinsley and her husband James, also a Baylor alumnus, remained involved with the University long after graduation. Eleanor served on the Alumni Asssociation Board of Directors and was named a Distinguished Alumni Award winner in 1991, and the Tinsley family was named among the Baylor Alumni Association’s First Families of Baylor in 1993.

Sic ’em, Tinsley family, for sharing your servant’s heart with Baylor and the community for so many years!

Heart of service at the core of Baylor’s mission

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Baylor 2012, Student life

President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor RollEarlier this week, Baylor was named to the 2008 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which “recognizes colleges and universities nationwide that support innovative and effective community service.”

Teaching students the importance of service has always been at Baylor’s core, as seen in both the University’s longstanding mission statement and the more recent Vision 2012. Whether overseas or right here in Waco, Baylor students learn the need to follow Christ’s example in serving one another.

I could share countless other examples (and we often have), but here’s a new one I just heard about. About a year ago, we covered the ONE Campaign’s efforts at Baylor and nationwide towards raising awareness of extreme poverty. In December, the Baylor chapter raised funds to support Malaria No More, a non-profit group that aims to end deaths from malaria. Above and beyond that, the Baylor group also worked with faculty to incorporate Malaria No More’s message into curriculum in classes across campus. Professors in departments as diverse as engineering, social work, Spanish, journalism and biology all pitched in to help spread the word about the over one million people who die worldwide each year from the disease.

Sic ’em, ONE Campaign supporters and all Bears who serve!

Spring retention rates continue to rise

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics

Student on campusOne of the things I love about Baylor is that it doesn’t just work to get you to enroll and then leave it up to you to succeed; the University goes to great lengths to ensure that students have the tools they need and learn the skills they need to complete their college degree and then succeed in the workplace. (If you need an example, look no further than the Paul L. Foster Success Center.)

Those efforts show up in the most recent spring enrollment numbers released by the University. For the sixth straight year, Baylor’s undergraduate retention rate has increased. That means that rather than dropping out or transferring after the fall semester, a greater percentage of Baylor students than ever are continuing to work towards their Baylor degree. This year, 95.2% of the Baylor undergraduates enrolled last fall returned this spring, up from 93.5% in 2004. This, despite a difficult economy that across the nation has hindered some students’ abilities to afford higher education.

As one Baylor administrator noted, “The strength of our enrollments testifies to the perceived value among students and their families of a Baylor University education and degree.”

Sic ’em, returning Baylor students!

Freshman flamethrower leads Lady Bears to shutout win over No. 1 Florida

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics

Whitney CanionHead coach Glenn Moore’s Baylor softball team will be depending on the strong left arm of freshman pitcher Whitney Canion to lead the Lady Bears this spring. And what an arm it is!

Canion, the Texas Gatorade Player of the Year as a high school senior last year in Aledo, Texas, has been clocked as fast as 71 mph on the radar gun. When you factor in the shorter distance from the pitching circle to the plate (40 feet compared to baseball’s 60 feet 6 inches), that’s the equivalent of throwing 100 mph in baseball.

Her talent is already paying dividends for Baylor. In just her second collegiate start, Canion pitched a complete game shutout as the Lady Bears beat top-ranked Florida 1-0 in Gainesville — the first time Baylor has ever defeated the No. 1 team in the country. In her two starts against the Gators this weekend, Canion struck out 19 batters in 15 innings, allowing just seven hits and one earned run.

The Lady Bears now return to Waco for their home opener, hosting the Getterman Classic this weekend. Season and individual game tickets are now on sale; get yours today!

Sic ’em, Whitney Canion and all the Lady Bears!

BaylorVision named top university video board display for 2009

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics, Honors

If you’ve been to a Baylor football, basketball, baseball, softball or volleyball game since 2002, you’ve seen the work of BaylorVision — Baylor’s in-house video production group — on the video boards at Floyd Casey Stadium, the Ferrell Center, Baylor Ballpark and Getterman Stadium.

It’s impressive stuff. The team intros and starting lineups might be the most memorable, but BaylorVision is also responsible for creating all the other material you see on the video boards during a game, ranging from instant replays to promotions. The video below provides some examples of their work from the past year; click here for a higher-resolution sample.

In late January, a group of BaylorVision’s peers from other universities honored the crew as the nation’s top video display at the university level. The award was given at a conference put on by the leading professional organization in the game operations industry; to put the honor in context, at the same conference, video groups from the Houston Astros, Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins were recognized as the best in Major League Baseball, the NBA and NFL, respectively.

For BaylorVision to be honored by its university peers in front of fellow crews from every major level of sports is quite an honor indeed. Baylor is the first private school to win the award; past honorees include Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado and Florida State.

Accounting students among top 5 in CPA exam pass rate for third straight year

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics, Honors

Tax DayWe’re just about two months from everyone’s favorite time of year: tax season. With income taxes needing to be filed by April 15, studies show about 35 percent of Americans will use an accountant or tax service — many of them CPAs (certified public accountants). If you’re looking for someone to do your taxes this year, why not find a Baylor accountant?

There are plenty of reasons to find a Baylor grad for the job beyond your shared interest in the Green and Gold. Most notably, Baylor accounting grads are prepared; for the third straight year, Baylor graduate students finished among the top 5 in the nation in pass rate on the Uniform Certified Public Accountant exam. In 2006, the group led the nation in pass rate, and in 2007 (the most recent results) Baylor students finished second.

Undergraduate accounting students have also performed well on the exam; their 57.14 percent pass rate for 2007 placed them 16th in the nation among first-time candidates without advanced degrees.

Future Bear already hard at work earning money for college

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Just for Fun

Juan MendozaAs a high school student, I worked about 15 hours a week sacking groceries. Though I didn’t particularly care for the job, the pay was alright, and I was able to save up some money that I later needed in college for things like rent and groceries.

I was reminded of all this when a friend recently e-mailed me this article about Juan Mendoza, a 16-year-old student in La Feria, Texas (near Brownsville, about 10 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border). Mendoza hopes to attend Baylor after finishing high school, and rather than hoping for scholarships, he’s gone to work, selling newspapers, mowing lawns, and doing whatever he can to earn a little extra money for college.

Mendoza even wears a t-shirt while working that says “Baylor University” on one side, and “Going to College, Send Me There” on the other. He credits his parents with instilling his drive for a good education and says he hopes to eventually become a district attorney.

School of Music professors release pair of classical CDs

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Academics

Albums by Baylor professorsBaylor has turned out plenty of musicians in recent years, many of whom we’ve mentioned on this blog — groups like Addison Road and solo artists like Erin McCarley. Then there are the more well-known alums who have hit it big in Christian music, such as the David Crowder Band, Shaun Groves and David Phelps.

But those artists aren’t the only Bears producing music. On the heels of the Women’s Choir’s CD of lullabyes, several School of Music professors have gotten in the act, releasing a pair of albums for those with even more classical tastes.

Professors Jeff Powers and Vincent De Vries released “In a Lyrical Way: Music for Horn and Piano by Flemish Composers,” published by MSR Music LLC on their MSR Classics label.

The Baylor Woodwind Quintet (comprised of professors Helen Ann Shanley, Doris DeLoach, Matt Morris, Richard Shanley, and Jeff Powers with Todd Meehan, percussion) also released a CD, “The Baylor Woodwind Quintet: Music by Richard Willis, Scott McAllister, Paul Richards, and Charles Rochester Young,” published by Centaur Records. All the selections on this CD were written by Baylor composers (faculty and students, past and present) expressly for the Baylor Woodwind Quintet.

Bears host Kansas tonight for national ESPN audience

Posted by The Baylor Proud Team in Athletics

Terry BlackTonight, Baylor men’s basketball will face Kansas on ESPN as the Ferrell Center hosts “Big Monday” for only the second time in school history. If you’ve been a fan of the Green and Gold for a little while, you probably remember the first, when Terry Black and DeMarcus Minor led the Bears to an 85-77 upset of then No. 6 Kansas back in 2001.

What stands out in most people’s minds was Black’s performance in the game: 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including six dunks — particularly the one pictured here, which poster-ized KU’s Kirk Hinrich (now of the Chicago Bulls) and cemented Black’s reputation as the top dunker in the nation that year. According to Full Court Press, Black will be in attendance tonight as the “B” Association’s Legend of the Game. (By the way, if you’re a fan of Baylor athletics but not reading the assortment of blogs at BaylorBears.com, you’re missing out.)

I was hoping to find some video on YouTube from the game (I’ve never gotten around to digitizing my VHS recording of the broadcast, complete with the surprised SportsCenter anchors leading the show with news of the win), but alas, I came up empty. Instead, you’ll have to be content with this recap and this photo gallery from that game.

We’ll just have to create some new memories tonight, starting at 8 p.m. CT. I believe tickets are still available, but if you can’t make it, tune in on ESPN or listen to the Baylor broadcast at BaylorBears.com.
