• Soon-to-be Baylor student explains relevance of High School Musical

High School Musical 3I must confess that I don’t quite understand the High School Musical phenomenon. I fall into an age bracket that’s too old to relate much to the Disney Channel, but too young to have kids that watch it. But clearly the movies have struck a chord with a slightly younger generation that relates to the themes of life in high school and now, in High School Musical 3, preparing to move on to college.

You might get a glimpse of why HSM has been such a phenomenon by reading this article in the Plainview (Texas) Daily Herald. The column is written by Stephanie Williams, a senior at Plainview (Texas) High School who will enroll at Baylor next fall. Williams is a part of that generation for which High School Musical relates to their experiences; each of the three HSM movies has paralleled her class, capped off with HSM 3 (subtitled “Senior Year”) coming out during her senior year.

These are tomorrow’s Baylor Bears, and I think the article gives us who don’t quite relate to HSM a look at why the movies have been so popular — and beyond that, what these students are thinking about and going through as they prepare to start college.

Sic ’em, Stephanie and the Baylor class of 2013!
